how to get birth certificate from south africa
« on: Saturday 27 June 09 14:08 UTC (UK) »

Undecided hi i have recently traced my uncle after 65yrs. he was a war baby and his mother (my gran) was deported and the child left in south africa with his natural father . He has an abridged birth certificate but like any other person would love to have a proper full birth certificate with his full name on and his mothers. i have done so many searches and feel like im banging my head up a wall..and im now lost and dont know where to look or how to get hold of one for him. i do know he applied in the 80s for full birth certificate through a researcher he employed but was told that the researcher os legal aid coulsd see it but it was not to be copied or given to him or any other family member. i wander why this was. does anybody know of any reasons for this and if there is a way i can get hold of one for him....please please help. all advice greatfully accepted. thanks cazzie. Hello Cazzie63

What a frustrating search for you!   Angry

Anyway, I wonder if you have googled Department of Home Affairs, Pretoria? Think if you phone them, you may find out how to get a copy of your uncle's birth certificate direct?    Huh

The only possibly reason I can think of which would apply in South Africa for someone not being allowed their, or a relative's birth certificate, is if an adoption has taken place.

In SA, until fairly recently, one only had "Closed Adoptions", where the court records were sealed, for none of the parties to know the biological birth details.

Perhaps your uncle went on to being adopted by a family, if, possibly his father did not bring him up?

Cheers
