Alexander Godwin b abt 1742
« on: Friday 31 July 09 20:21 UTC (UK) »

I have posted before under the heading of William and Henry Godwin, but now I need some help regarding my gggg grandfather Alexander Godwin.

He was born about 1742, and married firstly Elizabeth Holmes in St Faith Winchester in 1769, and secondly after the death of Elizabeth he married Betty Gover in St Mary Kalendar Winchester in 1783.

Alexander does not appear to have been born in Winchester, so where did he come from?
The only candidate I can find is Alexander Goddin (Godwin, Goddin, Godden appear to be interchangeable) born in Broughton, Hants in 1745 to Walter Goddin and Susannah nee Morgan. There was also Phillip  b 1743 and Walter b 1751.

If this is the same Alexander I can get back to Godwin Godwin (or Goddin Goddin) b Winterbourne Gunner (Wilts) in 1648. The only pointer I have to it being the same Alexander is that one of Alexander's daughters was christened Susannah.

However I have trawled through most of the Hampshire parishes that are not covered by IGI at the HRO (also a few of the Wiltshire parishes), and I can't find anyone else. If it is not the same Alexander, then what happened to the one from Broughton?

My query is really is there anything else I can do to try and verify a connection – or can I be reasonably certain it's the same Alexander?

By the way Walter Goddin appears to have died in 1758 in Broughton, but I can't find out what happened to Susannah. She does not appear on the Hampshire burial index, nor on the post 1754 marriage index for Hampshire.

Can anyone help please?
