Ninham family - can anyone find them please?
« on: Wednesday 07 October 09 20:07 UTC (UK) »

Hi

I have Thomas Bassett Ninham bn 1792 and Susannah Dickinson bn 1791 married 1817 in North Walsham.

They have children Henry, Charlotte, Elizabeth, Harriet, Emma, Susannah, Margaret, Horace, John and Julia between 1818 and 1836.

I cannot find them on the census anywhere!  Julia bn 1836 is my rellie, but I cant find her anywhere before 1856 when she marries Jonathan Bowles in Yarmouth.

Can anyone help??

thanks

Hello Shazzi_b

this looks like the family in 1841 -

Ho107/789/ Folio 35  Page 25

Coslany Street, St Mary, Norwich,

Thomas NINHAM     45     Painter   born Norfolk
Susanna    "            45  (looks like "straw hat maker")
Charlotte                 20
Elizabeth                 18
Emma                      15
Susanna                  14
Margaret                  10
Horace                      8
Julia                          5
Mary ORFORD         30      Dressmaker

All born Norfolk.  The writing is very faint and difficult to read.

Poor little Horace, with all those sisters!!

Hello again,

think I might have found Julia in 1851, but transcribed as "Julia Rinham"

Looking at the page, it does look like Ninham to me.

It's HO107/1815, Folio 321 page 11.
Exchange Street, Norwich.

Julia is aged 16, a servant, born Norwich.
The family she is with is headed by Richard B Smith, a chemist & druggist.

I'll have a look for the rest of the family.

Success!

Transcribed as Miniham on one website, and Micham on another!

Again, looking at the page, I can see it is Ninham

1851,

HO107/1813/Folio 134 Page 9,  Sawyers Yard, St. Edmund, Norwich

Thomas Ninham (indexed as above....)   59   Painter   born Norwich
Susanna                                                  58                      "
Charlotte                                                 32 bonnet maker b. North Walsham
Susannah                                                24  servant          b. Norwich

thankyou so much - I was beginning to despair with this one!

Can you by any chance find Julia in 1861, after she has married Jonathan Bowles?  Her children are not born until the mid 1860s so they wont be shown.

thanks

Hello again,

blimey, this family have certainly been mistranscribed a bit!

This one isn't so bad really, though it took a bit of finding...

1861 census - ref. RG09/1191 Folio 20, page 33
living at Row 129, Great Yarmouth.

They have been indexed as "Boules" - but once again, looking at page, it could well be Bowles....

John Boules  Head, married, 29, merchant seaman, born Great Yarmouth
Julien   "        wife                  25                                born Norwich

hi

Can anyone find Susannah and Thomas in 1861?  The only death i can find for a Susannah is in 1862, so she should be somewhere (but judging on the previous mis-transcriptions could be anywhere!)

thanks

Hi again Shazzi,

They were both still alive in 1861 -

RG09/1215 Folio 51, page 25

Living at Harrisons Wharf? Street?  bit difficult to read.
Transcribed as Minham, and looking at the image, it is Minham, but I'm sure they are your two.

Thomas Minham Head 69, House Painter, born Norwich
Susannah   "       wife  67                          born Norwich

I've had a look at the 1871 to see if Thomas was still around, but can't find him this time!

Best wishes,
Yorkslass
