Hi Scamp, You were kind enough to say that you might have some spare time to help with a lookup. .. you asked for as much info as possible to give aframework, so here goes:
Charles Henry HARGREAVES Architect died in Ilkley 12 Feb 1902 aged 59. His architectural practice was at 19/20 Exchange Building Bradford. When he died he bequeathed this successful practice to his second son Henry b 1878 Ilkley who was an architect in his father's firm. This son Henry is named in CHH's will as an Executor.
In Sept 1903 CHHargreaves's widow Ellen Hargreaves nee HALEY died. Her will has not been located- and she was a wealthy woman in her own right. Henry would have been working in the firm at least until after his mother's death.
By mid 1907 Henry Hargreaves was in Hartlepool as a ' Licensed Victualler". In c 1912 Henry and his family emigrated to Canada where he again pracitsed successfully as an architect.
My questions are: when did this firm of architects shut down and under what circumstances? eg were there unpaid debts? is there anything in local papers or professional registers about this? Was there any litigation involving the people named or Ellen Hargreaves will?
Henry obviously didn't quit because he disliked architecture and in Canada he was very successful.
Scamp, if there is anything at all about this it would be of interest- and I hope this is within the bounds of your offer. Thank you very much, charlotte
