Found Edward Cumberland 38 yrs FWK b. Ruddington in 1861
(Ruddington RG 9 2446 Folio 109 page 2 - 5 Marl Pit).
Would anyone be able to check 1851 and/or 1871 please?

I'd thought that there might be a second marriage.
 Edward perhaps found it better to stick with females with same first name.
BATES certainly fits later links 1861 sons Henry Bates & John Bates (mother 28 yrs)
However it all goes together and creates interesting links.

Morning Carol & thank you 
Suddenly making sense of the 'evidence' - Henry BATES CUMBERLAND married Mary ELLIOTT (Reg December 1880 Basford).
On later Census returns they appear to drop CUMBERLAND but after wondering where they were in 1881 I found them on Census in Ruddington, appearing as CUMBERLAND with Mary's birthplace confirming links (her family were from Whitwick Leics and I have a link on the Leics Look ups but not sure how to post link here ).
Mary's son George Henry ELLIOTT was 1 yr in 1881 recorded as CUMBERLAND,
on later Census as BATES and finally ELLIOTT. His baptism and marriage cert. show parent as being Mary ELLIOTT singlewoman (which seems quite thoughtful).
However as her father was George and husband to be Henry I wonder Henry CUMBERLAND was in fact his father - one of those times when I feel I would love to have been able to talk to them  .
Not sure I'm making this very clear but really pleased to see threads come together.
