Hi Waters/Spain Family in Maine or Seattle
I am trying for the 1st time to trace a gr-uncle of mine & his family, the following is the information I have, Richard Waters born 25th August 1884 at Abbey Hill, Wicklow, was baptised 27th August 1884, in St Patrick’s R.C. Church, Wicklow Town. He was the 4th child of George Waters & Maryanne nee Haughton. (1) Anna born 12th May 1875. (2) James Joseph born 21st May 1877 – 1913 no issue. (3) Julia Mary born 24th July 1879 – 1928 married Thomas O’Carroll of Summer Hill, Wicklow Town and had issue 10 children. (4) Richard John. Dick as he was called was married 27th Oct 1913 to Hanorah Spain born 2 May 1884, in R.C. Church of The Catholic University, Dublin. Witnesses Thomas O'Carroll (his brother-in-law married to his sister Julia Waters, my grandparents) & Jeannie O'Sullivan. His address on his marriage cert. was 29 Cuff St. Dublin. His occupation was Silk weaver.
Hanorah Spain was born 2 May 1884 to John Spain & Ellen nee Mullen. Her address on birth was 64 Church St. North Dublin, and address on her marriage certificate was 29 Cuff St. Dublin
Dick as the family called him emigrated to Main or Seattle in U.S.A. with wife & about 6 children (information verbal from my Mother Angela). I have never tried to track them down, but I am sure we must have some Waters descendents still living in the U.S.A. In time they may wish to contact us. I have 'a feeling' that Richard & his older brother James may have had a falling out!
Informaion from C.1911 City of Dublin. P.L.U. =Sth Dublin: D.E.D.= Mansion House: Parish = St. Peter's: Division = St.Stephen's Green: Street & number of house = 29 Cuff Street, Dublin. 29 Cuff Street, Dublin. Shop & Dwelling House, 5 windows in front of 1st class house, 7 families living in this house.
1 John Spain, head of household, Roman Catholic could read & write, age 65 yr [bc 1846] Shoemaker, Widower, number of children 'blank', born Dublin City. 2 Hanora Spain, daughter, Roman Catholic could read & write, age 27 yr [bc 1885] Single, Occupation Silver Polisher in Pipe Factory. Born Dublin City. 3 Annie McFutcheon, Grand daughter Roman Catholic, Cannot read & write, age 6 yr [bc 1905] Scholar, single born Dublin City.
I would be very grateful for any information on the above.

From the 1920 US census for Hornell Ward 5, Steuben County, New York
395 Fair View Avenue
Richard Waters, head, 35, immigrated in 1909, alien, born Ireland, parents born Ireland, weaver at glove factory Honora Waters, wife, 35, immigrated in 1913, alien, born Ireland, parents born Ireland Richard Waters, son, 4-1/12, born New York, parents born Ireland John Waters, son, 1- 4/12, born New York, parents born Ireland Peter Waters, son, 6/12, born New York, parents born Ireland
From the 1930 US census for Skowhegan, Somerset County, Maine:
Malbon Mills Road
Richard J Waters, head, 45, age at first marriage 29, born Irish Free State, parents born Irish Free State, immigrated 1911, naturalized, heeler - shoe shop Honorah Waters, wife, 45, age at first marriage 29, born Irish Free State, parents born Irish Free State, immigrated 1913, naturalized Richard J Waters, son, 14, born New York, parents born Irish Free State John G Waters, son, 11, born New York, parents born Irish Free State Peter J Waters, son, 10, born New York, parents born Irish Free State Mary E Waters, daughter, 8, born New York, parents born Irish Free State Hanora M Waters, daughter, 7, born New York, parents born Irish Free State George J Waters, son, 6, born New York, parents born Irish Free State
The 1925 passenger list would appear to be the return from Ireland that was mentioned in George's obituary. I found a passport application for Richard dated 1924 and it has a picture of him and the children. Hanora is originally listed on it but then crossed off and there is a note that says "wife is not citizen" and her face was also removed from the picture with the children.
Richard Waters sailed on the Cymric which departed from Liverpool and arrived in Boston on 27 Jul 1911. He was 27, single, born in Wicklow and his last permanent residence was in Wicklow. He listed his nearest relative in the country he came from as brother – James Waters, Abbey Street, Wicklow. He was going to join a friend named John Bullard in Boston.
When he returned to Ireland, he departed from New York on the Carmania and arrived in Liverpool on 10 Aug 1913. His last permanent residence is listed as USA and his future permanent residence is listed as foreign country.
He and Hanora are on the Franconia which departed from Liverpool and arrived in Boston on 6 Nov 1913. Richard is 29, a silk weaver, born in Wicklow and his last permanent residence was Wicklow. He listed his nearest relative in the country he came from as sister – Mrs. T. O’Carroll, Summer Hill, Wicklow. His final destination is Hornell, New York. He indicates that he had been in the US before for 2 years. They are going to join his uncle Peter Haughton in Hornell. Honor Waters was 27 and born in Dublin. She hadn’t been in the US before but the other information is the same as what is listed for Richard.

WWI draft registration:
Richard John Waters, 395 Fair View Avenue, Hornell, Steuben, NY, born 25 Aug 1884, cotton weaver. He lists his nearest relative as Honora Spain Waters (same address). He registered in Steuben County on 12 Sep 1918.
Note: Registering for the draft does not mean he served.
From the Social Security Death Index:
Richard J. Waters, born 22 Nov 1915, died 1 Dec 1998, last residence Skowhegan, Somerset, Maine Mary E. Waters, born 18 Dec 1920, died 29 Dec 1992, last residence Skowhegan, Somerset, Maine
The dates of birth for Richard and Mary match the dates on the passport application. I couldn't find a death for John but there is a possible entry for a John with a birth date that is one day out from the passport birth date. That John died 23 Jan 1995 with a last residence in Ansonia, New Haven, Connecticut.
From the Maine Marriages, 1892-1996 database, here are a couple possible marriages:
Richard J. Waters of Skowhegan married Blanche V. Cyr of Skowhegan on 27 Oct 1938 John G. Waters of Skowhegan married Katherine H. Warren of Skowhegan on 18 Jul 1941
I've sent you a PM by the way.

Hi Jacquie,
How can I ever thank you for all the information you have sent me. I have only scanned it and have not had time to take it all in yet. I will reply to you when I have digested it. We knew nothing about this family only what my mother told me, which was very little.
If I can be of assistance with look up for Wicklow Town (only Town) I will be delighted. My mother always said, "if you got a favour, return it to that person and if that is not possible, to someone else"
I am going to print your information out and enjoy it, Once again many many thanks.
Julia, the irish practice of calling the second child after the mother's mother, who in my case was Julia Waters.

Hi jorose,
You very kindly sent on some www. to search for information on passenger lists, and death index for Richard & Hanora Waters. Also one for the Obituary of their son George, unfortunatily I am unable to get very far on these sites. I keep getting no information. Can you please tell me, is their an easy way to gain the information.
Sorry to be a burden, but it is the first time trying to access American records.
Your Julia M
