The Death of Job Morgan
« on: Sunday 07 June 09 18:29 UTC (UK) »

Job Morgan died on the 8th August 1867. His death certificate states that he died when a log rolled upon him.
Job was a Sawyer so I guess he was working on a large log (tree trunk size). In those days two sawyers would work together, one above the log, the other in a pit under the log.

As I live in Essex I wondered if anyone going to the Records Office could check the Citizen of the time and see if there is any mention of this accident?

I would be very grateful of any help

If an inquest was held, as seems likely, a report would have appeared in the Gloucester Journal the archives of which are in a reference library somewhere in Gloucester.

Hi Martin and welcome to rootschat,  Grin

As ChasH says there almost certainly will be a report in the local paper...
You have the exact date of death which is a great help in asking for a lookup so why not G**gle to find the Libabary in Glos that hold s the archived papers, and ask them  to check this out- scan ,it for you and email,it... The Libaraians are very helpful.

Thanks for that ChasH.
I have now sent the records office an email asking for help. Don't know why I didn't think of it before, so thank you for getting my grey cells working.

I have just got an email back, they state they will be in touch in 7-10 days (Must be very busy)
I don't know if they mean that they are going to find any information or they mean they will let me know if they will look for the information!

I will let you know either way though.

The ambiguity is annoying but at least you've started it off..

The good people of Gloucester archives have checked and in this case they can't find any details either from the coroner or local newspapers of the time.

One interesting point that was made was the phrases 'Top Dog' or 'Under Dog' came from the way of cuttting timber. As explianed earier. One Sawyer would hold a large saw from above the log and the other would hold the saw from below in a pit. So at the time of this awful accident Job was the under dog!

Further, Job lived in Suffolk Street in 1861 (any information on that would be great) and worked close by. Does anyone know of any timber yards in that area at the time?

If anyone can shed any light on this or Job Morgan I would be grateful
