Hi saw your offer in the lookups offer section - I would love a lookup to try and solve my brickwall. My ancestor John Payton married in Abingdon in 1740 (given as of East Ilsley - but no sign of any Paytons there) I think he probably came from Abingdon originally. There is a family of Paytons there prior to this but for many years they seemed unsure as to wether the surname was Payton or Perton so either were called Payton als Perton or used which ever version took their fancy at the time. I have been trying (for nearly 20 years now) to find out if/how John is related to other members of this family and I am coming to the conclusion the only way would be to strike lucky and find a will mentioning him or his son Thomas Payton (born 1748)
I would be very grateful for any clues or ideas anyone might have on this.

I am very surprised indeed, because you are the FIRST person EVER to ask for a lookup in this index - is everybody asleep?
Congratulations are in order I think! You are very brave.
I will dump here what I have in the index, but it isn't good, since the only possible names which might have connections are PATIENTs in Wantage - don't really have many Abingdon wills. No Paytons or Pertons I am afraid.
Hope you can decipher it - if you pull it out into a Word document it should be more legible :

Thank you for looking for those for me Charles - I have to admit that Patient was not a spelling varient I have tried so far (I thought I had tried most things) I shall go through them carefully.
I must congratulate you/your wife on a wonderful idea - I think wills are a very under used family history tool which is sad because if you find them they can tell you so much about how your ancestors lived - perhaps peole are put off by the handwriting, but they are usually worth working at
Thanks again Debbie

Thanks for your kind words. Trish has more wills to index and I will ask if she has any Paytons. If you find an index entry you are interested in I can give you more information from the will itself.
btw I can't claim any credit for any of the indexing work!
