Framlingham and the Readery
« on: Monday 20 July 09 05:22 UTC (UK) »

[email]Wondering if someone can tell me what the Readery was/is in Framlingham. My grandfather, when enlisting with the Canadian Expeditionary Forces in WW 1 stated on his Attestation papers that his next of kin was his mother and her address was the Readery in Framlingham.  Any directions to where I can find more information on the Readery would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks

Lori

Maybe if you contacted this housing Corporation they could tell you the history of the building..they are based there.

Hi Lori - and welcome to Rootschat  Grin

The Readery is in Castle Street (between the Castle and Jeffreasons Well).

It was the home of The Reader who (by the terms of Robert Hitcham's will) gave daily Bible readings to the residents of the Sir Robert Hicham Almshouses in Framlingham.

I think the Secretary of the Sir Robert Hitcham Trust lives at The Readery - a lovely old house.

PS I will have a look to see if we have a photograph, or I can take one next time we are in Fram (which is often)

You may be interested to know that my husband and I are involved in the setting up of a Fram photoarchive web site which will go live later this year, going through all the old photographs at the moment.

I think that The Readery is on the Fram Town Trail, if you go to www.framlingham.com you may find a photograph of the house today.

We have lots of Fram archives and happy to help anytime  Smiley

Thanks for the information!

Do you know how long the daily bible readings went on?  Would my great grandmother who lived at the readery in the 1910-20's be involved in that? Just curious.

I don't know much of the Roe family and their history yet. I started working on that branch a number of years ago, but ended up searching other branches. I am now just getting back to it. Very little is known about the Roe family in Framlingham by anyone still alive today so I am starting with a fresh slate on this research. All I really know about them at this point, is that my grandfather was one of three kids and that my great grandfather died in 1890 I believe and that my great-grandmother lived at the Readery at the start of the first world war.

Cheers

Hello Lori,

My husband is from Framlingham and his family came to the town in the early 1700s from nearby Fressingfield.  We hope to retire there in a few years.

Do you have any information at all on the Roe family in Fram?

The name crops up frequently in old papers we have as they were in trade in the town.

You can find the 1901 census for Framlingham at www.poppyland.co.uk - it is on line with the publisher of the last book that John wrote about the town in the period around 1900.  Just follow the links on the web site.

Hi Pat

In answer to your question about the Roe family in Framlingham, I dont know a lot. I know that my grandfather and siblings were all born in Framlingham and that my great grandparents names were Harry Edgar and Anna Roe. I am slowly going through the census and BMD indexes to see what I can find. I was told by my aunt that both my great-grandparents are buried in the Framlingham Cemetery. I have found out that my great uncles did not marry and were both in the military and I am still looking into more information on that as well. But as for the connection with Framlingham, I have very little information and will have to depend on the "offical" records (census and BMD) unless I can find something else. I will get as much info as I can via these records and as I can and then will have to make a trip to a LDS church to see if I can order in parish records to get more information.

Cheers

Hi Lori,

I have the Fram PRs and also there are Framlingham Look Ups available at the Suffolk Look Up Exchange which you will find at
www.suffolk-surnames-list.co.uk   Wink

I will be happy to have a look for you (I am also looking for another Rootschatter) but it will have to wait until after this weekend as we are both very involved with the GEE100 weekend at Blaxhall (see Suffolk Resources & Links on these pages for information about the weekend).

I will see what I can find for you, will also check the copies of Lambert's Almanacs that we have at home too - I am pretty sure I have seen advertisements for the Roe businesses in the town).   Plus of course we have the business letterheads with the Roe family businesses.

Busy week for me as I have a lot of work on for SLHC and then the weekend at Blaxhall.  Will get onto the look ups for you after the weekend  Grin

Windy here,

The Roes were a minor milling family in the area with the following millers recorded:-

Name               Villiage                        from - to
Mr. ?                 Ashbocking                     1864
Roe, B.F.           Baddingham              1888-1891
Roe, Augustus  Eye                                 1885
Roe, F.B.           Eye                                 1925
Roe, Augustus  Framlingham             1888-1896
Roe, Augustus  Horham                     1884-1885
Roe, Clifton       Horham                          1937
Roe, F.B.           Horham                     1888-1925
Roe, Robert      Horham                     1850-1874
Roe, Samuel     Horham                     1844-1847
Roe, William      Redlingfield                1853-1858
Roe, F.B.           Ubbeston                        1885
Roe, Augustus  Wickham Market              1879

My guess would be to look to see if you have any connection with Horham (about 7 miles NW of Fram); that is, of course, if your Roes are related to the milling Roes!

All the best,

Windy Miller
