Fay family Massachussets
« on: Sunday 07 June 09 20:23 UTC (UK) »

I was at my parents house today and mentioned the "family" bible. They both seem to remember a bible that was our Auntie Lil Sellick's. (she died in London in 1988 aged 97).

Suddenly Dad remembered where it was and proceeded to find it.

It was very interesting but does not appear to be a Sellick family bible.

It is a very large bible published in 1867. The insciption inside reads:

Eliza J Reed June 1st 1867. They is also a pencil comment American Publication.

In the middle of the bible are the family records:

Marriages: In Boston, Mass on 6th June 1867 Eliza J Reed to George W Fay MD.

Births: Eliza J Reed Boston March 9th 1831
George W Fay (Westboro)? July 27th 1832. (I can't really make out what the place name is.)

Deaths: Eliza R Fowler b Nov 13, 1792 d Nov 30 1871.
George W Fay at Savannah May 2nd 1872.
Eliza J Fay died at Chelsea Mass. April 23rd 1889

I am really intrigued. Who are these people and how did their bible end up in my Auntie Lil's possesion. I wonder if one of Eliza & George's children came to England and Auntie Lil worked for them? As far as we know Auntie Lil never left England and it looks like the Fay's never left the USA

Does anyone know of George & Eliza Fay. Who is Eliza Fowler

Tried searching for Eliza J Reed, born c1831, died Chelsea, 1889.  One result (so far):
1850 Chelsea, Suffolk, Massachusetts Census
Eliza J Reed, age 19, born c1831, Massachusetts
Living with Eliza was
Eliza Fowler, age 54, born c1796, Massachusetts
No occupation for either.

Cannot find anyone on the 1870 census with the following (with a surname similar to Fowler)
Eliza, born in Massachusetts, 1794 (+/- 5 years), living in Suffolk County, Massachusetts

There is quite an extensive tree about the parents and ancestors of George Whitfield Fay, born 27 July 1832, died 2 May 1872, Savannah, Georgia.
http://wc.rootsweb.ancestry.com/cgi-bin/igm.cgi

If you google "George Whitfield Fay" there is a book that has one paragraph about his career.  No mention of family.  "Fay Genealogy.  John Fay of Marlborough and His Descendants."

Ouch - my head hurts.  If you look at the Fay book entry Lisa quotes it shows George lived and practiced in Baltimore, Maryland.  But if you look at George Fay on the 1870 census there are 3 (of relatively few of them) who are both approx. the right age, and physicians...what are the odds?

One in Baltimore, one in Massachusetts, and one in Wisconsin.  None married to an Eliza.

Was your aunt a family researcher?  Based on the penciled note you mention of "American publication", I would suggest that maybe she simply bought the bible in an used book store.

Thanks everyone for your replies.

I have now established who George & Eliza Fay & Eliza Fowler are.

I haven't worked out how my aunt came to be in possesion of the Fays' bible.

Nickgc  - maybe you are right and she did buy the bible in a secondhand bookstore, but I think I'll keep an open mind I like to think she came upon it in a more "interesting" way.
