I'm trying to find out what happened to my mother's brother who emigrated to Ontario in the 1920's. We had a couple of letters home, then nothing. a cousin in Alberta had a letter borrowing money so that he could travel to Alberta to join the NWMP but no-one heard of him again. I don't know where to start looking as the records are so localised. I wondered if anyone had come across the name.

My Grandpa Stanley has the hanky in his pocket
|
Hi Phylscot,
Was Charles from Liverpool? The Charles that Lisa has referred to coming to Canada in 1925 has his grandfather John McDougall listed as his next of kin, then crossed out and lists his father Charles Stewart McNair. The address is 102 Sydney Rd., Bootle, Liverpool, England.
If this is your Charles, he has come to Canada under the Boys Scheme through the Salvation Army and is headed to Woodstock, Ontario.

Yes this is definitely him. He was born in Liverpool in 1907 - his father (My grandfather) was also Charles Stewart McNair. He and his father fell out over a matter of business and he ran away to his Grandfather, John McDougall, who sorted out a passage for him to Ontario. We had relatives in Toronto, but he didn't stay with them, and all we heard from him was as I said yesterday. Thank you very much for your trouble. Can you point me in a direction to find out more? Phyl PS who is on the photo?

You wonderful person! Both of these apply. My grandfather had a leather company in Liverpool, then Halifax, and he made doctors bags, attache cases and the footballs for Everton! I have checked and the patent office gives the address of his works in Seel Street. Both the patents are his.
As for the other - His wives were Jessie McDougall and Elizabeth McCracken (Mother was Geddes). A little subterfuge here I think! Photos to follow.

This is my grandfather with his second wife, Elizabeth McCracken. Below is his first wife, my grandmother Jessie Mcdougall. She died when my mother was 3 and Charlie was 5, and they went to live with the McDougall grandparents - father too, until he remarried. This picture of Mum and Charlie was taken during that time.

I'm having trouble with the soaring club ref - I get into the site but not into the bit about the silver badges - I just get a blank screen. Any ideas?
