Hide & Seek with George & Mary
« on: Sunday 07 June 09 22:06 UTC (UK) »

Hi, I appear to have reached an impasse with another family line. On this occasion its George Henry Kenney (b. Leicester c1857) and his wife Mary (b.Leicester c1859) I know they were living in Belper St. Leicester in 1881 with three children and suspect they were living in Mansfield Notts for a short time 5 years earlier. I am having trouble locating them in 1891, before they re-emerge in 1901 in Suffolk St. Leicester with considerably more children.
As well as wondering where they are in 1891, I wonder where and when they married, what Mary's maiden name was and if George was related to the numerous Whetstone Kenneys? Can anyone shed some light on this for me please .

The reference for that marriage is Leicester 7a 493.

In the 1871 census there is a Mary Ann Breward b Leicester 1856 daughter of William and Sarah
and two Mary Ann Wards one born 1857 Leicester daughter of John and Ann and the other born 1859 a servant so no parents given.

Might give you a clue if George and Mary used any of these names for their children.

Don't you just hate it when that happens two people with the same name appearing on the same page!!

Thanks folks, some interesting stuff coming through. The marriage issue is still quite foggy, I would certainly say 1875 would be the correct year. On the idea of names then the third child was Ann,but to the best of my knowledge none of the other possible Christian names quoted follow as sibling names. On a positive note, that is definitely the family I am looking for, Bardolph St. Hmm they certainly moved around Leicester didn't they? Nice one Mike.

Well that one came out of leftfield! I wasn't expecting an Irish place of birth. Shocked That info has taken me down another route. I've now discovered William was a shopkeeper at 288 Belgrave Gate Leicester in 1881 living with his wife, four sons( two appear to be twins) one daughter and a grandson! He seems to have married Mary Ann Wilbond at St. Georges church Leicester on 4/april/1854. Can find several Mary or Maria Willbon/Wilbon/Wilbond in Leicestershire area from 1728 up to 1806 but none of their births or christenings fit the bill Huh Still thats what makes all this searching so interesting I guess.

Many thanks Mike, the timescale certainly fits as according to 1881 census Mary Ann was 3 years older than William, but I cannot seem to locate that family anywhere else I've looked so far! Most Wilbourns/Welborns etc seem to be in the Melton and Rutland part of this area, but none I can link to Mary Ann's family. The search goes on! TL  Huh

Still struggling with George Henry Kenney's marriage c1875/76 began thinking since his father was Irish could it be a Catholic marriage and if so what  appropriate church in Leicester would it have been or are there options?

Also does anyone know if the Whetstone Kenney clan originally hail from Ireland? Just curious to know if George could be related to them.    Undecided

Hi Loisand,

Thanks for your reply. Yes please, there may just be some clues there to help me get nearer to my Mary, I'm sure there must be something obvious I'm overlooking.
