I am enquiring for an acquaintance, the meaning and origin of her surname of Jurd. She descends from a Daniel Jurd of London born about 1780 who was transported as a convict to Australia, which makes for a lovely colourful history. I found him on the LDS site and I am sure she already has that history - she is just puzzled about where her unusual name comes from and wonders if anyone can enlighten her. King William

Hi Robin
The surname Jurd is registered with the Guild of One Name studies so it might well be worth contacting the researcher on the origins of the surname.
http://www.one-name.org/
The variants they give appear to be
Gurd with variants Goord, Goorde, Gourd, Jurd
They may also have an informed opinion on how useful/informative 'The Jurd Name in History' is - from the cover it may be biased towards the American market.
Regards
Valda
