I am trying to trace the year of birth for my great grandfather Robert Little - I have his marriage certificate saying he married in 1877 to Marion Johnstone and he was 26 - done a search for 1851 and af ew years either side but no luck - same with his mother Agnes Little, went back to around 1847/1857.
Any help would be appreciated.

Hi David
Not all baptisms are listed in the OPRs for various reasons - missing records, baptism not entered or a non-Church of Scotland baptism, so you might not find them.
Do you have a death certificate for him which would act as another indication of his age.
This would also apply to Agnes. Have you found them on any of the censuses (which would give a birth place) as I don't at the moment see anyone matching those criteria on the 1861 in Kirkcudbrightshire or Dumfriesshire?
Regards

I see that on the 1881 census, they are in Kirkpatrick Juxta, Dumfriesshire. Agnes is also with them.
Full details of the 1881:

Little Robert, 28, Railway Pointsman Marion, 26, Pointsman's wife, b. Moffact James, 3 Hugh, 1 Agnes, mother, 63 James Donald, boarder, 43, shoemaker journeyman, b. Maybole, Ayrshire John Ritchie, boarder, 23, Waggoner, b. Middlbie, DFS
Robert, his mother and the two children are all b. Kirkpatrick Juxta

Thanks Gadget - a great help.
A question - when I print out the census do not see a street name also I have worked out that Robert would have been born around 1853 but unable to locate a birth certificate and also for Agnes who would have been born around 1818 - would have thought even in not baptised there would be a birth entry.

Not necessarily a baptism entry. Lots are missing or not entered.

The IGI (extracted) does have the baptism of an Agnes Little, Kirkpatrick Juxta, 25 June 1822. parents - john Little and Isabella Johnstone.
It's possible but I think you should get Agnes's death cert to confirm. There is one registered Dryfesdale in 1886, aged 63. Not sure if she's yours.

Added - she might be the one in Moffat in 1881, so not yours. Did they move?

By 1891, Marion and the children are in Moffat but Robert isn't with them:

1901

Little Robert, 50, gen labourer Marion, 47 Robert, 18, labourer - general
All down as being b. Kirkpatrick
I think that the information so far shows that he was b. 1851-1853, Kirkpatrick Juxta with mother Agnes Little and it is probably as much as you might get

A couple of questions as not sure I fully understand - is it possible that people are born in time gone by without a birth certificate or may it have been recorded and then lost or ..............
On James Donald it shows as journeyman - what would this job entail? likewise with John Ritchie who is a Waggoner and Robert a Telegrah Clerk?
Apprecaite your continued assistance.
