Hi All,
I have a John TOMBS who died in 1755 in Turkdean, Glos. - I have a
copy of his will. I have been able to trace his descendents in
Turkdean but I can't get any further back than John - or even find his
birth/baptism.
I have looked at the Turkdean PRs at my local LDS centre but the
earliest TOMB/ES in Turkdean appear to be John and his descendents
which suggests that he wasn't born there. John was married in Turkdean
to Sarah Miller on 12 April 1716 - found on the PRs.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what I can do now? I have no
idea where he might have been born or where there might be any
siblings for him that would help me.

Thanks for that Chas - I hadn't seen those Tombs. I found two John Tombs in Northleach which could 'fit' too - on the IGI - but I don't know how to go about finding whether any of them are 'my' John Tombs, that's my dilemma

Hi,
My Tombs are from Tredington & Elmstone Hardwicke & Forthampton - see Wm Good's website. It's a step from Turkdean, but you never know.
Have you tried alternative spellings? I've found the surname in my line spelt
TOMS, TOMMS, TOOMBS - others could be THOMS, TOMMES, TOMBES
There is a John Tombs mentioned in Forthampton in 1708 (when his daughter Mary was baptised), but can't find a marriage in the Parish.

Hi gene-genie
I have found Tombs spelt in a variety of different ways as you say .... I sometimes get the impression that Gloucestershire is bursting with them - but not the ones I want 
You mention Wm Good's site - I haven't come across that, I don't think, how do I access it?

The Wm Tombs that appears in Tredington is mine, he appears to have been a parish official.
I've a similar problem re two of the same name two John Newmans - one is Wm Tombs father-in-law and one isn't!
I'll keep a watch out for any John Tombs - how old was he when he died in 1755? I am looking for a Richard and Elizabeth who baptised their son Francis is Forthampton in 1709. (He may be related to the John I mentioned earlier. )

Thanks for that gene-genie - I had seen that site before ages ago but hadn't realised it had Tombs on it or that it was Wm Good's
I don't know how old John Tombs was when he died - it doesn't say on either his will or on the PRs. I am assuming that he was born c1680-90 because he married in 1716 - but I could be way out there too 
I'll keep an eye open for any connections between my Tombs and yours as I go on - if I ever get any further back with them ....

I too am interested in Tombs. They certainly were good breeders!
I have William Tombs of Churchdown marrying Elizabeth Posten of Norton, in Norton in 1750.
They seem to have lived in Norton until grandson William married Mary Jenkins in Churchdown in 1816 and stayed around Churchdown, Twigworth, Down Hatherley for many years.
I have the LDS film out at present but it only goes back from 1812 so I have a gap between 1816 and 1837 which I am really interested in.
I was assuming that because Wm in 1750 was "of Churchdown" he would have had other relatives still there but I cannot find any Tombs in Churchdown from 1812 back to 1763. I still have to work my way back from there (am doing it that way as the film is very hard to read and thought that by reading the clearest first I may gradually get accustomed to the writing!).
I suppose that just because the marriage records for 1750 said Wm was of Churchdown does not necessarily mean he was born there?
Hopefully I may have some luck when I recommence searching this week- if my eyesight lasts!
