unable to find marriage or her family
« on: Monday 08 June 09 12:53 BST (UK) »

My Great Grandfather was called Thomas Cynwell Phillips, he was born in 1871 in Llwynypia, Rhondda, Wales.  I have obtained his birth certificate which shows him as Thomas Phillips not Thomas Cynwell Phillips but I know from Special Event records from the family that he was known as Thomas Cynwell.

His parents are shown as Lewis Phillips and Ann Phillips formerly Kenwil.  I cannot trace any Kenwils, and I cannot find a marriage for Lewis and Ann.  (According to census records their had their first child together in 1867) It says on the census records that Ann (Sometimes known as Sarah Ann) was from Senny, Brecon. (some census records show Sarah A some Ann her internment record shows her as /Sarah Ann I have been able to find a family called Conwil from Senny - am I right that Conwil could translate as Cynwell/Cynwyl - Thomas's middle name ?

Is there any other way I can prove who Anns family are ??

It could be possible that Ann (Sarah Ann) was married before she married Lewis and hence why you can not find a marriage to him in her maiden name.

You could investigate these marriages to see if they are your Lewis Phillips

Marriages Mar 1871
Borsden    Sarah        Neath    11a   597
Morris    Herbert         Neath    11a   597
Phillips    Lewis         Neath    11a   597
Price    Margaret         Neath    11a   597

Marriages Jun 1864
George    Grace        Newport M    11a   287
Phillips    Lewis         Newport M    11a   287
Tebbs    John         Newport M    11a   287
Williams    Ann         Newport M    11a   287

This marriage is particularly interesting as the spouse's name is missing.

Marriages Sep 1864
Phillips    Lewis         Newport M    11a   ___

hope that helps

The GRO has a much clearer image of that last marriage for Lewis, and the missing page number seems to be 267
entering that in the search on freebmd gives 3 other names for that page

Sep 1864 Newport M  11a 267
Evans    Thomas
Mathews    Ann
Watkins    Elizabeth

so possibly the missing spouse for Lewis Phillips in Sept Qu 1864  is Ann Mathews?

Yes I think this maybe the right family as my great grandfathers birth cert shows his Mother as Ann Kenwil - I think it is Conwil and somewhere along the way I am sure this translates to Cynwyl - my g.grandfather was Thomas Cynwel/Cynwell

I just have no definate proof of this and dont want to pursue the wrong family ........ but thanks for everyones help !!

Hi eac61,

Just to give you a bit of confidence, CONWIL Cayo district of Carmarthenshire officially became CYNWYL Gaio when de-anglicised. So they appear to be one and the same!

Regards,
Lee.
