Employment records for Sudbury and Glossop Halls???
« on: Monday 08 June 09 12:50 UTC (UK) »

Hi there, Can anyone tell me how I could find employment information/details from Sudbury and Glossop Halls for the following periods??
My GGGrandfather James Reid, was employed as a gardener, & my GGGrandmother a live-in maid at Sudbury Hall by the Vernons in 1861,  {James lived in the gardeners house).. They married in the church at Sudbury Hall in 1863
Also had Roe and Reid families living and working at Glossop Hall in 1881.
Any suggestions or offers for lookups???
regards Karen

Karen, it looks as though Derbyshire Archives have some records of the families that owned these estateshttp://www.derbyshire.gov.uk/leisure/record_office/our_collection/default.asp
If you select  the last download for family archives they list several families with connections to both. If you are able to pay a visit to Matlock you may be lucky.

Thanks for that, I think I'll give the Derby archives office a go as it's a bit difficult finding my way to Matlock from Australia at the moment LOL!!!

In 1881 The Rt Honorable Lord Edward Howard was  in residence at Glossop Hall, he would therefore most likely have all his staff with him. There are no Roe or Reid in the census though.
These are the staff members listed.

There is a John and Mary Roe, with 9 children. He is a joiner (carpenter) but not living at the Hall, lives on Church St. He could however have been in the employ of the Hall.

Karen
I have a James Wyatt(Jnr) who I believe may have been a hall porter at Glossop Hall. Not sure exactly when but he was a Toll Bar Keeper when his father died 1873.He was married to Mary Ann Hill.
He was buried Aug. 8 1882 Glossop Cemetery.
The Wyatt family lived at Blackshaw Farm Glossop Dale.

Hi Karen,
I seem to be following you about, I have just been on the Cheshire pages and seen your Hill End posting. Then I came on here to have a look for Glossop, (where my GG Grandad David Aspinall was born in 1851). And here you are !!!

I was going to ask anyone if they knew how far it is between Glossop and Mottram?

Regards
Tracey
p.s.  I`m going to the Durham page next  Grin

Thanks Skewy Smiley

Three miles eh? Now that makes a lot of sense to some things that were puzzling me.

Thanks for the map link.
