Hi, I am, searching for birth record of Elizabeth Verran, daughter of Thomas Verran and Mary Bennett. Approx 1831.
Elizabeth is listed on Vic Australia death cert. as from Perranarworthal and born c.1831. 1841 census has, Kea Parish, at Helston Water,
Thomas Verran 45 copper miner Mary Verran 45 John Verran 20 tin miner Thomas Verran 15 tin miner Joanna Verran 14 ELIZABETH VERRAN 11 Eliza Verran 5 James Verran 2
* all recorded on census as born in same (Kea) county.
Elizabeth apparently emigrated in 1849.
thanks in advance
Richard and Sam

Hi Richard and Sam,
A Big Welcome to RootsChat
Thomas VERRAN = Mary NEWTON 3 Aug 1812 Perranarworthal
Eliza VERRAN baptised Hicks Mill Chapel Gwennap 19 Apr 1833 (born 14 Sep 1832) parents Thomas VERRAN miner of Perranarworthal and Mary his wife (dau of Benjamin and Hannah NEWTON)
Other baptisms in Perranarworthal listing parents as Thomas and Mary
William VERRAN 29 Oct 1812 John VERRAN 1 Oct 1815 Mary VERRAN 2 Nov 1817 Thomas VERRAN 30 Apr 1820 Richard VERRAN 15 May 1822 Hannah Davis VERRON 9 Aug 1826 James VERRAN 27 Sep 1827 Eliza James VERRAN 12 Mar 1837
Unfortunately I have had no luck with any other baptisms to them. I note some of the names listed in 1841 fit with the baptisms but others are missing, and we need a bit of licence to accept this is the same family - given the ages provided in 1841. Of course if the marriage is the correct one the parents are probably a little older also. Adult ages were rounded down in 1841 but looking at these dates John should be listed as 25 and Thomas as 20 if this is all the same family. There is a James baptised in 1840 mother Mary so chance he was the daughters son.
1841 census only gives us that Yes they were all born in Cornwall - It does not tell us where in Cornwall.
Thomas and Mary had a daughter Grace who married William VERRAN (They had a son baptised in the same chapel in 1834) On Lookin Further she is ged 30 in 1841 so I think she may be daughter of earlier couple mentioned below. (there is a Mary aged 75 in the household in 1841)
Now there is also Thomas VERRAN = Mary JORY 30 Jan 1791 and some earlier baptisms I have not listed (of course some of the listed ones may belong to this couple.)
Not very helpful I am afraid and I have had no luck with a marriage of a Thomas and Mary BENNETT. Of course the information provided at death was not provided by Elizabeth herself so it may be incorrect. Do you have Elizabeth's marriage certificate? She would have provided that information herself.
Cheers Kris

Hi again Richard and Sam,
I have just noticed in 1851 Thomas 58 Widowed an Engineman is back in Perranarworthal. With him are his daughters Hannah 24 and Eliza 18 along with grandson James 12 so it does look like it is all the same family.
Now there is a Richard VERRAN arriving as an assisted immigrant in Vic Nov 1848 aboard the NELSON He is 26 and travelling with wife Loveday 24 and daughter Mary N 2
Richard VERRAN = Loveday Hart MOYLE Sep 1846 Redruth 9 269
birth Dec 1/4 1846 Redruth Mary Newton VERRAN
In 1841 he is in Gwennap with the MOYLE family.
This appears to me to be Elizabeth's brother. I am not seeing Elizabeth's arrival listed on
http://www.access.prov.vic.gov.au/public/PROVguides/PROVguide050/PROVguide050.jsp
does she arrive single?
Richard and Loveday had a son John in 1852 in Vic then nothing. Googling led me some old posts stating that they returned to Cornwall and came out again in 1857 and then on to Christchurch NZ
Cheers Kris

Hi Kris, thanks very much for all of this great work.
In answer to your question, yes I do have Elizabeth's marriage certificate - both of them.
In February 1851 Elizabeth Verran (spinster) was married by Banns to Edwin Gardiner in Melbourne, thereby (presumably) eliminating her from the 1851 England census.
This first marriage certificate does not make any mention of the parents at all.
Edwin died in Dec. 1857, and Elizabeth remarried in Dec. 1859 to Joel Wood.
On the latter marriage certificate, Elizabeth's mother was identified as Mary Bennett, and her father was identified as Thomas Verran (written like 'Yerran'), Engineer.
So we have a half match. Father is looking good, but the name Bennett is obviously confusing.
How certain (or not) are you that this is the same family ?
Unfortunately I have had no success in identifying anything about Elizabeth's arrival in Australia.
Now I think I will need to search out some link between Bennett and Verran.
Thanks again for your useful help, it is much appreciated. (Where are you based ? England ? the time on your message is very early in the morning!)
cheers Richard
