Inexperienced English researcher needs help!
« on: Monday 08 June 09 21:16 UTC (UK) »

Hello

I need some advice.

Miss Jane Freeman was discharged from The Brampton Hospital Sanatorium in Frimley, Surrey, England (where she was recovering from Tuberculosis) on 5th May 1911. She should have kept in touch with them so they could monitor her health but she didn’t. Their registers show that they tried to trace her in 1920 without success and she was believed to have gone to Australia.

Jane was born c1888 in Meesden, a small hamlet in Hertfordshire, England and was the daughter of David and Eliza Freeman. She was a ‘Ladies Companion’ and her address on the sanatorium registers was 53 Princes Avenue, Finchley (now in North London although the boundaries might have been different then).

There is an entry for a Miss Jane Freman (with only one ‘e’) on the passenger list of the ‘Friedrich (Frederick) Der Grosse’ which left Southampton on 20th January 1913 for Sydney. It shows that her intended final destination was New Zealand.

Can anybody suggest how I can find out if this is the ‘right’ Jane based on the information I have? I have no experience of New Zealand (or Australian) records.

Many thanks

Lyndsey

Assuming she didn't marry  Roll Eyes there are no deaths shown for Jane Freman, but a couple of possibilities for Jane Freeman.
You can check them at

Hello Lyndsey

Can only suggest that you check the New Zealand Death index >>

http://bdmhistoricalrecords.identityservices.govt.nz/home/

There doesn't appear to have been a marriage in NZ for a Jane FREEMAN or FREMAN (within a suitable timeframe).

If your search of NZ records is to no avail, then it may be worthwhile placing your query on the Australian board.

Good luck.

If you know the details of the ship that she travelled on, you can request Archives New Zealand to send you a transcript of the passenger list.  This may provide you with additional details.   Hopefully if she travelled as a "ladies companion' it will record who she was travelling with and you may be able to use their details in your search also.

Additional details on how to order can be found on the following site.

Good luck in your search.

---   just noting  ---   (because requests of this nature to Archives New Zealand, come at some cost) !

A search of PapersPast, tends to reveal that this (huge) vessel
"Friedrich der Grosse" (a.k.a. "Frederick the Great"), called only at Australian Ports.   If that is in fact the case, then Archives New Zealand, will not hold records.    [There are numerous advertisments placed by NZ shipping agents for voyages to London ... out of Sydney (via Melbourne and Adelaide.]

Thank you for your continued advice.

I think perhaps I have not set about my research in a very intelligent way. As I do not have any information on Jane after she dis-embarked at Sydney I should perhaps be pursuing information on her landing there. Just because her intended destination was New Zealand doesn’t mean she actually got there. I have heard of cases where passengers have changed their plans en-route.

Hi Lyndsey

It's okay   ... you're doing just fine.    Smiley
(Always a tad difficult when you are searching in unfamiliar territory).

But as previously mentioned, I think it's a good idea to post a query re: Jane, on the Australian board.

Good luck.
