Thomas had no middle name, I am sure, because I have his birth certificate. He was born 13/2/1898 - although the army records say 13/2/1896
I will check it out. I feel it is unlikely that he lived to 76 though, without making contact with home. But one never knows, I suppose.

Today I got the online records for Thomas Rodgers 16th Garrison Battalion.
His stay with the army was apparently short, from what I can make out in the records. He went AWL a couple of times for a few days at a time. His crime was 'drunkeness', and finally he disappeared and was written off as a deserter.
It says he fought in WW1 in the Leinster Regiment (he lost a brother in that war close in age to him) in France. That would have been in the British Army I suppose. So this was his second war, and he was about 45 or so.
He would have been last seen around 1942.
I feel sad thinking about all this, as I have researched his youth and he had a tragic start as an orphan, when both parents died in 1904. After losing his brother James in WW1 he must then have emigrated to Australia.
His address was London Hotel Ardlethan and his occupation was labourer. I wish I could find a death certificate.

I have been wondering where a person would go if they left Hay at that time.
It struck me that if the army were looking for him, he may have gone to Sydney to lose himself, and perhaps changed names, in which case there is no hope of finding him....
I am now thinking of following up on Jamjars possibility of a death record in Parramatta and have one question that hopefully someone could answer. I can order a certificate on line, but can it be delivered by email to me?

How sad a life he must have had. His address being a London one could maybe indicate no family in Australia. So it could be possible that when he died his parents names would not be known.
If you use a transcription agent you can get a copy emailed to you. I myself use Laurie Turtle and have allways fund him very helpfull and efficient

Transcription agents in NSW give a cheaper and quicker source for certificates. There are not certified copies but are excellent for genealogy.

I think I will take your advice and email Laurie Turtle, in the hopes of finding something.
Thomas was from Belfast and had no family in Australia - his address was either 'London or Landon' Hotel in Ardlethan, at the time of his enlisting in 1941. He must have been working in the area there as a labourer.
I cannot stop searching till a find a definite death cert for him.
If all did not go well for him in the army, maybe he did not want to make contact with his brother, but went on to live in Sidney or similar city. Anything is possible I suppose.

Lucy his file is digitised and online. He was actually last recorded in the army on 27 Sep 1941 before he deserted. He enlisted in Hay and I wonder how many enlistees who were perhaps itinerant workers, working on the large stations around Hay, gave a hotel as their address.

Thank you Cando. I did notice that the record is now viewable, but was not so when I ordered it - at least unless I am very mistaken.
Yes, Thomas went missing on 27th Sept 1941. He was posted to the x list - does this mean deserter? . Then it seems he was taken off that list and declared an illegal absentee.
Thanks for the link to the hotel - in fact I had just already viewed it! I have been searching everything I can think of. I wonder if he returned there?
On the WW1 forum a very kind person has found medal records for him in the Leinster Regiment in France. I am hoping I may get some lead from his earlier records.
Could he have been murdered or died by some misadventure? Or did he deliberately get lost. He was fond of a drink, as the record goes, at that stage of his life.

I mentioned the digitised record to enable others who have helped on this thread, read it.
A deserter/illegal absentee/discharged due to misconduct are all used in the service record. It would be very easy in the remote inland area of Australia to deliberately avoid being 'found'. He may have assumed an alias and died under that name.
I hope you will eventually find out what happened to Thomas.

I am trying to piece this mans life together up to Sept 1941.
He was in WW1 British army, in France, and then in India, up to 1925 I think.
I think I have found his passenger record to Australia, - is there any way that somebody could check this for me?
I think he travelled from London to Adelaide on the Beltana, arriving 2nd October 1928 Barcode 11554312. He would have been aged 30 from Belfast, or maybe a London hotel address.
Then he must have worked for 13 years I am guessing around the Ardlethan area, and in contact with family.
I am wondering if there was enforced enlistment in 1941? He knew the army life, and had been at war, so why would he enlist and then dissappear from a peaceful prisoner of war camp?
Would appreciate any help on the passenger list.

Oh dear! I thought I had found his date of arrival!
I managed to view the whole passenger list by only putting in the ships name and year, but it doesn't give any dates of birth.
There is one other possibility though.
Thomas Rodgers 11555385
passenger on the Orama London to Fremantle
arrival 10th December 1929
I would love to check his date of birth if possible. My Thomas was b 13/2/1898 Belfast N Ireland
