Could Idwen be short for Ceridwen?
« on: Tuesday 09 June 09 04:57 UTC (UK) »

Hi there

Thanks to the 1911 I have found another sibling "Idwen Jones" a daughter born circa 1902.  Can't see a birth entry in the name of Idwen anywhere but there are several Ceridwen.  Is it a girls name?   If so what do any Welsh speakers think - might Idwen have been registered as Ceridwen?

hope someone can help Smiley

Hi Heather  Smiley

Not sure about this. In my experience the diminutive of Ceridwen is Ceri. I can't think of any other girls names that would fit with Idwen, though  Undecided

Hi Gadget Smiley

Thanks for the input.  It's a bit of a puzzle.   The thing is, it is written very clearly so definitely not a transcription error or anything like that.    I've emailed some of the elders of the tribe to see if they recall anyone by that name  Wink   Trouble is no one has ever mentioned her before.  She must have died early on or been a very quiet one Grin

Where does it say that she was born?

Do all of the others showing on the birth registrations show up on the census or deaths or is there one missing?

She was born in Rhiwlas, Llanddeiniolen just like all the rest - the last one of the 14 born to my great grandmother Grin    None of them were twins either!   Pregnancy must have agreed with her.  One of my cousins remembers her very well.  Apparently she was the size of a house and lived to age 85 Grin Grin Grin

Idwen was the only one born after the 1901 census.  Have checked all Jones births for Carnarvon and Bangor on freeBMD and also an all counties search but nothing in the name of Idwen Jones.   There is a Ceridwen Jones reg in Caernarvon in Sep 1902 which fits nicely with age 8 on Apr 2, 1911, so I may take a flyer with her parents names to see if there is a match at the GRO.

Hi Heather,
Idwen is a girl's name in its own right, and unabbreviated; it would not, as Gadget surmises, come from Ceridwen. You will find plenty of instances (horses, dogs and people) by googling.

Don't tthink I surmised - I was answering Heather's question about Ceridwen - that the only diminutive that I've come across was Ceri.

Can you give some links to Idwen - I couldn't find it on any of the Welsh Girls' Names listings.  No matches when I google for it except for lots of Japanese sites  Roll Eyes

Thanks Gadget Wink    I'm going to search the indexes 1901-1905.  Her father was in Glamorgan in 1901 perhaps she was born down there or somewhere in between and somehow never got registered Smiley.    My auntie thinks that the family called Idwen by another name and my uncle (age 89) is trying to remember what it was Undecided

Heather

PS It looks like an Idwen Jones married a Hugh R Jones in 1930 in Bangor.....
