Anne posted about the Elland Parish Records CD on my posting about Hoyle families. I have managed to obtain it from my mother's cousin but I have what my be a spectacularly stupid question - why is there significantly more information on baptisms in Rastrick on the IGI than there is on the CD?

Hi, Might it be that the CD was made some time back and there have been more transcriptions since and these have been added to IGI?
Maybe that's spectacularly stupid answer

Maybe you can find what you are looking for there

Hi Holmemoss
Rastrick definitely was a chapelry of Elland, itself being within the very large parish of Halifax. Elland St Mary operated as the mother church for Rastrick
I have noticed that some of the IGI entries are not on the Calderdale FHS CD, and vice versa, not only the Rastrick ones but for all the Elland records. Some interesting differences too, with occasional records being baptisms on one and burials on the other
I think the answer is that the IGI entries are from the Bishops Transcripts (click on Source call no to see), and the CD is from the actual parish records. A good example of why ideally both should be checked!
I don't know why there should be a great difference in the numbers though - maybe not all Rastrick baptisms were noted as such in the Elland register.

Holmemoss, may I ask Anne a question about Halifax registers please while we are on this topic?
If someone died in Southowram in 1800 in which registers would their burial be recorded? I believe in Southowram there was a chapel[?] called St Anne's in the Grove.. or a name similar to that but there seem to be no records for thisas such. Someone told me the burial would be recorded in Hx registers but I've also been told there is no death for Ann HARGREAVES died mid 1800 probably there... so can you please give me some guidance where to look in all the Halifax regs?
Any help/guidnace appreciated... and thanks Hlomemoss... charlotte

Hi maidmarion, Of course I don't min you answering
On a map of ancient parish of Hx divided into chapelries and townships I can see Southowram but noyt Lightcliffe. Where is it please? St Matthews Lightcliffe Burial regs go from 1703 but where is it in relation to Southowram? Dumb question maybe

Haven't been to your link yer but that puts it at Hipperholme cum Brighouse
I see now in tiny writing.... note to myself- get specs checked
I guess she could have been buried there would have depeneded on where in Soutowram she died . They were in receipt of Poor Law relief when she was very ill and the Removal Order was suspended- presumably until she died. I'll try to get a look at Lightcliffe burials.
Thanks for your help. charlotte

Hi Charlotte
I don't want to mislead you - I'm far from an expert on the Halifax records, and live too far away to have any access to the records.
I believe the Southowram chapelry (mother church Halifax St John) was called St Anne's in the Grove or something similar, and before that Briars chapel. According to Genuki the registers are in Wakefield, although presumably Calderdale archives will have film or fiche. Burials are from 1818 though. Before that they seem to be included with Halifax, at least it says the Bishops Transcripts include them with Halifax.
The Calderdale FHS CDs seem silent on the subject of their raw data - might be worth asking them about it. The LDS definitely have the Halifax St John Bishops Transcripts, but don't appear to have the parish registers.
Could your Hargreaves have been non conformist? There were loads of non-conformist chapels in Halifax, and they were pretty much in a state of flux around 1800, following the death of John Wesley. There was a great deal of taking over different buildings, and splinter groups going off to form their own churches and chapels. I shouldn't think there is much in the way of records for many of them around that time.

Anne, Thank you. I used to belong to Calderdale FHS and maybe I need to take anoyther look at what they have for sale and also the LDS films. RE the nonconformists... the next generation to the Ann Hargreaves- ie her children, were certainly non-conformrists so maybe I need to go that route. Given that at the time of Ann's death 1800 the family were under a Removal Order would mean no MI.. pauper's grave probably. Thanks for your help and interest.

Thanks Brian... Hargreaves is a very common name in WRY and in Lancs unfortunately... and in the time frame of my interest, 1750-1820, Thomas seems to have been the preferred Christian name that goes with Hargreaves
Will work my way theu regs you looked at and see if anything seems to gel... endless hunt, isn't it
