I have been offline for a while and only just seen the responses. Thank you everyone.
I have what may be another spectacularly stupid question; in the marriage records on the CD information is given as to whether the person made their mark or not. If the answer is 'No' then does this mean the person was literate or is there another explanation?
I ask as it appears I have a lot of literate male ancestors which seems most unusual in the late 1700s.

Hi again, No question is spectacularly stupid here- we've all asked daft questions and don't believe anyone who denies this
Marking his mark was only done by those who couldn't write so what you assume would seem to be correct. There are mysteries about how very humble people cam to be able to write- I have a weaver's son and in a family in receipt of Poror Law money who had avery well formed hand. that was c 1800. I suspect the nonconformist cahepls set about making their people and others literate so they could read the Bible and also get on with good work- part of their commitment to a work eithic.
Others may have different take on this.

Thank you, Charlotte. I must admit I did not give any thought that people may be literate because of a religious connection.
