Ah! Jane,

Long Eaton has always been in Derbershire. They have only given it a Nottingham post code to confuse us old in the tooth and future generations.

Don't rule out Clay's works. It was massive, and when I lived inLong Eaton men didn't get a job anywhere from whence they could not get home for lunch.

Hi Susan,
There was another ironworks near the Trowell/Ilkeston border, which was set up by my ancestor, Edward Adams (manager-partner) and his partner:

Edward was manager at the Stanton Ironworks Company from 1853 to 1871, but left  to start this new venture - The Erewash Valley Iron Company, (Furnace Road).

Just had a look at map and photo will go down and look at furnace road and try to imagine what it was like.
Still like to know if there are any employment records anywhere.

Hi again,
It doesn't look as if there are surviving records (except those for 1884/5 when the Erewash Iron Company company changed hands). There are details of this in the London Gazette, too.
The National Archives site says there are staff records for Stanton, held at Derbyshire Record Office; but these are from 1878 onwards.
I had a look at the Warwickshire University website, as they hold Trade Union records for the Amalgamated Union of Foundry Workers. It looks as if the early records don't focus on individuals members. See what you think:

(*sorry - couldn't shrink link)
The only other think I can suggest is looking in local newspapers - just in case there was some incident which mentions the person, or the company; but this is a long-shot.
Anyway, good luck.
