The BELCHER Family in Clyffe Pypard / Wootton Bassett
« on: Tuesday 09 June 09 17:56 UTC (UK) »

Hello,

If anyone has access to the CLYFFE PYPARD and WOOTTON BASSETT Parish registers and/or Bishop Transcripts could they help me checking for any burials and marriages of the family of ISAAC BELCHER, Yeoman, and his wife BETTY (or ELIZABETH) SAMSON.

I think Isaac Belcher must have died before 1839 and might be buried there as I think, but am not certain, that Betty/Elizabeth died in 1839 (death Cricklade Dec. quarter 1839 (8. 190)).

According to the IGI I think they had 8 children, Elizabeth, Isaac, John, Edmund, Samuel, Thomas, Mary & Ann, bap. at Clyffe Pypard between 1816 & 1827.  I would appreciate a check for burials for any of these children and maybe any marriages.

Edmund and the younger siblings were living in Wootton Basset in the 1841 census, so there might be some burials / marriages there also.

Also and I know I'm maybe pushing my luck!?) if there are any BELCHER gravestones in these 2 parish graveyards, they would be great to have!!!

Incidently, this is such a great forum, with so many helpful and considerate family historians willing to help people like myself, who have difficulty accessing far-off records.  Many, many thanks to those who have helped me so far. Very much appreciated.

Hi Craig,

Have had a look on the National Burial Index for Wilshire (1825-1860) and surprisingly only found one Elizabeth Belcher, who was buried on 16.05.1837 aged 21 at St Bartholomew & All Saints, Wooton Bassett.  Guess she could be the daughter (unless you know she was alive after that).

Looked for Isaac Belcher within the whole of Wiltshire but he's not listed.  Sorry.

If you have any other specific burials I could help with, drop me a line (the NBI is good but doesn't have everything I'm afraid).

Kind regards

Hi Jovi75,

Many thanks for your help.  That Elizabeth Belcher is in fact the daughter/eldest child.  She was baptized at Clyffe Pypard in 1816.
Could you maybe cheque for an Elizabeth or Betty Belcher buried in 1839.  She would be about 50 as my Elizabeth, the mother, was born in 1789.
Thanks so much.

Regards,

Craig

Have had another look but cannot find anything for an Elizabeth/Betty Belcher of that age around that area.  Sorry.  Tried just Wiltshire but still nothing.  Would be odd for it not to be listed if they were buried at the same parish as their daughter.

No problem.
Many thanks for trying. It was a good to get the information about daughter Elizabeth though.

Thanks,
