dress shop
« on: Tuesday 09 June 09 19:01 UTC (UK) »

Hi,

Does anyone know anything  about  a ladies fashion shop in Grange Road

Darlington. I believe it was there in the1950's /60's  and was owned by a lady

  called Vera Pegg.

I believe it sold upmarket ladies fashion items.

Does anyone remember this?.

            Thanks  Annie

Hi Annie,

I can't help with the shop, but I recognise the name Vera Pegg, probably because it was almost opposite Duplex Motorcycles and Lucas Electricals.

What would you like to know, I could probably find out?

Thanks Colin.

I am interested in any information however trivial about this shop. I believe that at some point there was a chain of them throughout the north east selling v. expensive ladies clothes.
I would love to know where it was exactly -street name, how many years it was in Darlington and if anyone has any memories they could share about the lady who owned it and maybe her staff.

Thanks for the reply much appreciated

I don't think there will be a problem in finding where the shop was, but it's history and staff might be a bit more difficult. I'll probably get back in a few days.

I remember the shop well Annie .... it was directly opposite Northumberland Street as Colin said... opposite Duplex the cycle shop.

The shop is still there and hasn't really altered at all ... it now sells upmarket, branded second hand clothes.

I seem to remember Vera Pegg became the landlady of 'Smallways Inn' ... it's a hotel right up the A66 on the way to Bowes Moor ... I think she ran it with her sister.

I'll try to find out more .... and maybe get my facts right.

The strange thing is...., I checked trade directories for the mid 50's and 60's but there was no mention of Vera Pegg, even going through all addresses in Grange Road. Huh Huh

I'm wondering Colin, if that was her maiden name .... maybe the shop was in a husband's name.

A Vera Pegg was born Darlington 1921, but no marriage for her in Darlington.

Thank you to everyone  for replying you have all helped me a lot.

I didn't even know that the shop was on the corner of Northumberland st.

I had heard that she ran the smallways inn but wasn't sure.

Very strange that it wasn't listed in the trade directories!

An old lady I know told me about the shop and it made me curious to know

more about the owner and her contemporaries- according to her Vera Pegg

went out with Stirling Moss how true this  I don't know.

                           Thanks again

I was wondering that if a premises was a shop and residence, the trade directory might have listed the main resident rather than the shop name. Perhaps the best bet would be to check for an advert in the papers to find the address.

Annie I seem to recollect that she had either a husband or partner with her but I can't remember his name (it wasn't Stirling Moss but it wouldn't surprise me if she went out with him) .... I think they were also in the Londonderry Arms at Long Newton just outside darlington and then the Morritt Arms at Greta Bridge for a while ... before Smallways.

My memory isn't what it was ....... lol.

Grin Grin Grin Cool Cool

Darlington & Stockton Times, Saturday 14th Feb 1959, Advert on page 9.

VERA V PEGG of Darlington
Wishes to announce the official opening of her new salons by Lady Graham at 13 - 14 Grange Road, Darlington, on Monday 16th Feb at 2.30 pm.
Parades willbe held daily and mannequins will show a really lovely collection from all the leading model houses at 2.30 and 7.0 pm. until Friday 20th Feb inclusive,
Admission by invitation only.

Also at Durham, Middlesbrough, Barnard Castle, Northallerton

***************************

After finding this advert, I then realised that almost half the page was dedicated to Vera.
Gleaning a few pieces, She moved from 40 Blackwellgate after 23 years in the business because the Council had other plans for the property (presumably rented ?? )
There was a picture of the wedding dress that she designed and made for her daughter  Huh Huh

She either started very young, or could the 1921 birth be her daughter, and she was only known as Miss Vera Pegg in her professional capacity?

Ah yes Colin ...... Lloyd's bank is where her shop was in Blackwellgate, it was completely gutted and rebuilt.

I've attached a picture (or tried to) of the shop in Grange road, now.  The shop on the left with the two bay windows on the first floor.
