My grandfather, John Macdonald was involved in land raiding in Harris in the 1920's and I believe, was arrested at one point and possibly taken to court. Does anyone know where police or court records of that period are kept (if indeed they were kept)
(although the 100 yr rule might be in force with regards to any proceedings - the standard procedure regarding details of a conviction were that it was retained until the 80th birthday or death of the person involved)
The Agricultural History review has some interesting reading regardin the land Raiders and the background to this. http://www.bahs.org.uk/37n1a5.pdf

I am not aware of any police records for that era having survived (reports would not have been kept anyhow) but doubtless the events would have been well reported in the media (national, if not local). Scotsman archive (need to subscribe to view but free to search) might be a good start?

The case papers lodged with the PF would have been retained as it is Crown Office policy but access to them is strictly limited although some sections of the index have been digitised and made part of the searchable NAS catalogue. It is extremely unlikely that Criminal proceedings from the 1920's period would be opened to public viewing.
Individual police forces had various policies regarding document retention (or otherwise) and while many individual reports were destroyed after a few years other items such as station charge books were sometimes retained (where records survived they often became part of local archives rather than national archives. e.g. Strathclyde handed over piles of historical documents to Glasgow from the forces in the west of scotland which combined in 1975)
Unfortunately from the information provided by connor395 it would appear that the forces which became Northern Constabulary did not retain such documents.

It is always worthwhile to write to Stornoway Public Library, Ive always found them very obliging. They keep records for both Lewis and Harris. In addition, I will be going to Harris for a day within the next month, if I can help let me have a definite query at the Luskentyre graveyard and I'll make time to do a check for you.

Thanks for the Stornoway library idea, I hadn't thought of them. Thanks for the offer of help, but I'll be in Harris myself for a week in August so I'll do a bit of rooting around then
