1901 census
« on: Tuesday 09 June 09 22:46 BST (UK) »

This is a stab in the dark.  I am looking for a Henry Tew born about 1864 Leire.  He may of married a Edith or a Elizabeth in 1894.
Is ther a census record for him in 1901?

Regards

Hi.

I can't find exactly what you're looking for but this might be of some help:

There's a marriage recorded Q2 1894 between a Henry Tew and an Elizabeth Bailey in Lutterworth.

In the 1901 census there is a Henry Tew born in Swinford. The dates dont quite match up but his wife is a Fanny Elizabeth Tew and they have 5 children - Ellen, George & Annie Bailey and Walter & Frank Tew.  Could well be the same family?   They are living in Rugby.  Let me know if you want any more information.

Thankyou
I may have the wrong marriage for Henry.  I presumed he married Elizabeth Bailey myself, recorded in Lutterworth 1894.  If I could confirm more details would help.
His parents were George and Elizabeth Tew born Leire.

Well there is also a record of a marriage of a Henry Tew in Leicester in 1872 but I would imagine the one in Lutterworth is more likely to be him. You could always order a copy of the marriage certificate from the GRO which should confirm who his parents were & therefore if you have the right Henry.

I have searched the 1891 census but can't find any record of him & the record I've already mentioned is the only one I can find for 1901.  He is recorded as living with his parents in 1881.

Hello

What do you think about this one ? ....

1901

Islington RG13/187 Folio 137 Page 3

Harry Tew Head M 35 Electric Light Labourer Lere Leicester
Emma do Wife M 37 Laundry ? Hand Shoreditch

125 Shepperton Road, Islington

In the last quarter of 1893 Harry Tew married Emma Nagle at Shoreditch. The GRO reference is 1c 206. www.freebmd.org.uk/

I have not found a Harry Tew born c1865 on the 1881 and 1871 censuses from Leicestershire so this could possibly be your Henry as shown in those years.

The Henry Tew who was born in Swinford in 1858 and who probably married Elizabeth Bailey can be seen on the 1881 census with his parents, Samuel and Mary, on http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp.

He is clearly a different person from the Henry who is the son of George and Elizabeth, who can also be seen in 1881, on the same site.

The birth indexes for Lutterworth from 1855 to 1871 show only two registrations for children called Henry Tew - the one in 1858 and the one in 1864. There are no birth registrations during the same period for anyone called Harry Tew anywhere in Leicestershire.

Although registration was not compulsory until 1874 and there could theoretically have been others born in that period who were not registered, the absence of any others on the censuses tends to suggest that the one in 1858 and the one in 1864 were genuinely the only two births with that name in the relevant area.

Hello

Here are two GENUKI links about Shoreditch and Islington, which are both in Middlesex and almost adjacent to each other ....

http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/MDX/Shoreditch/index.html

http://homepages.gold.ac.uk/genuki/MDX/Islington/index.html

There is a bit of historical stuff in the two links and at the bottom of each are links to modern day maps.

You can also find out more information by simply looking for the names on a search engine such as Google.

On the 1891 census there is an interesting entry ....

Islington RG12/146 Folio 106 Page 19

An Elizabeth Tew aged 23 from Leicestershire is a General Servant Domestic in the household of a Henry Freeman at 46 Hazelville Rd, Upper Holloway, Islington.

I wonder if this might be Henry’s sister who appears on the 1871 census as a four year old, with the family in Leire ? She is not with the family on the 1881 census because she is in Domestic Service in the household of a George H Johnson in Leire.

I had nothing on Elizabeth, apart from birth 1867.  This could well be her, especially if her brother was living in the same area at the time.  This is probally why I have been having trouble finding any marriage for these people, I was looking in the wrong area's.
A good lesson learned - do not expect them to marry in the same villiage as being born.
Nothing like a new set of eyes to help get things moving again.

Thanks
