What  and where is "Davidsons land"

I have a marriage from 1823 where it states the groom was from Whitehorse Close, Canongate, Davidsons land.

Can anybody explain to me what this is.
Many thanks.

Hi Mary,

Mr. Davidson would either have owned the close's buildings or just part of it. Likely the groom stayed in one of these buildings.

Two links I found through Google; may give you some extra info. Smiley

Hi Hume.

Thanks for your reply. Answers my question. I,ve skimmed through the two links you sent and very interesting reading. I,ll get my tea and then go through it thoroughly. A lot of Edinborgh history there.

I noticed a name, David Hume, one of yours?

Once again, thanks a lot.

Thank you Mary, for referring me to hume's response, and to the sites he listed.  And especially, thank you Hume! What great information about Edinburgh - those sites will be very useful.   I had wondered why there were two Whitehorse Closes - given that someone on our tree had been born at one and it appeared to be far away from everywhere else the families lived - now I know I was thinking of the wrong one.

If the family stories are right, perhaps. Wink Certainly I have been told we descend from the same Humes of Chirnside and Coldingham.

Interesting! I have a Davidson somewhere in Edinburgh. Ran out of time at the RO looking at the relative census (years ago now), but I also got interested in David Hume of Chirnside "Father of modern philosophy" when looking up other ancestors in Chirnside. I shall look up this website you gave us, Hume.
