The subject causing me trouble is birth/christening of Johanna Maria, daughter of Anders Svenson (not sure of spelling) and Anna Helena.
Based on info gleaned from certificates I think she was born in 1852 or 53, in Karlshamn, Blekinge Sweden. In case it helps the English translations found on the certificates were " Carlshamn, Kartzhann & Bleking". Her anglicised maiden name in Australia was usually written as "Anderson".
Thinking this would be easy I obtained a film from a local Family History Society only to find no trace of her. The film was described as covering Church Records for births 1850 to 1873 Blekinge, Karlshamn.
Now I'm wondering if this one film could have covered all of the Church records for 23 years? Perhaps it was only for one church or sub-district of Karlshamn?
In the title for the section dealing with the period 1850 to 60 appeared the words: Landsarkivet & Kyrkoarkiv Church. I believe the first means provincial archive but I’m not sure of the second word.
Would anyone have any knowledge or suggestions that might help me?
Many thanks,
Les

I have also had to try to trace a Swedish Anderson ... and it wasn't easy! An unexpected difficulty arises if any of her male forebears served in the Swedish Army ... where, apparently, they were allocated new surnames!
My husband's ancestor (not connected to yours, I'm afraid) was the grandson of a fellow who'd served in the Army ... and, whether for some weird security reason, or out of sheer laziness (I'm stumped to know!) ... he was given the new surname Bruhn! So ... some of his children were known as Bruhn ... and some were known as Anderson; - and then just to confuse things further, some of them changed their names from one to the other, at random times during their lives!
I've just searched my e-mail contacts; - thought I had an addy for Halland Genealogical Association, but I can't find it again. Perhaps if you G**gle it? They may be able to help, if you haven't already run across them?
PS - If they can't help you, they may be able to help you find someone who can (which is what they did for me)

Thank you for your input Deb. I will look into that site. It is early days and I remember reading that the Church Household Examination records are sometimes a better place to start. Actually, most of the problems in Australia seem to stem from communication between persons I assumed had poor English skills and persons taking down the details, although in some cases the information given would have been given by their children all of whom were born in Queensland.
On one Certificate Johanna's father was recorded as Andus. As this did not seem like a Swedish name I've assumed it should be Anders especially as her only son was so named.
You mentioned the name Bruhn. I lived next door to a family in Sydney with that name in my childhood. The father had married a Saunders who was related to me on my Paternal Grandmothers side. Sort of a half Cousin I guess? Never thought of the name as being Swedish.

Thanks Deb. Definitely a site I would never have found. I will post a question. In answer to your question re Naturalization I found her husbands cert. in Qld. but I never looked for Johanna's. I guess I thought she would be covered by his. A good suggestion thank you again for your trouble.
