Does anyone know what type of vehicle was used by removalists in Bristol in 1941?
I have a receipt from C. Hawkins & Sons of Bedminster, for my family moving from Redcliffe to Knowle - and I'm wondering would they have used a horse drawn cart, motor vehicle or what?

Mary, In 1941 it would have been motor vehicle... if they had a lot of furniture a pantechnicon of sorts- if a little maybe a smaller van or truck.

Many thanks to you all for your replies, and to Ricky for the great site. Yes it looks very much like the 1938 Bedford McArthy's van. It was Knowle in Bristol - so not that far and incidentally the cost of removal was One pound Seven shillings and Six pence (I have the receipt).

Marty, Do you know why they moved? and what was the breadwinner's occupation- my curiosity here is knowing what % of his weekly wage would have gone on the removalists bill. It seems such a small amount now-

Hi Charlotte
This was my family. It was during the war and my father was in the Auxiliary Fire Service (having been graded unfit for military service due to an eye defect) so I have no idea of what his wages would have been. He had been working for a Men's Outfitter in Bristol before the War. I think there were probably several reasons why they moved - the area was fairly close to Bristol Docks so there was quite a lot of bombing I imagine. Also, they moved to what was then a fairly new council estate and a more modern house. In the Langton Street house there was no bathroom or inside toilet. The whole area has now been demolished unfortunately.
Maybe someone knows how much members of the Auxiliary Fire Service were paid at that time.

Hi Mary, Defence of the Bristol Docks would have been a priority , so the move is understandable- and also the bonus of a newish house would have been attractive.
If the AFS moved him they may have picked up the removalist tab. I was thinking only how much moving house costs these days...
