Hi Audrey

Do you know for definate that Kate was born in 1859 as the same family in 1871, you found in 1861, minus Betsey, have a Catherine aged 9 with them.

Hello

On the 1901 census there is a John Sewell aged 43 from Carlisle married to Catherine aged 40. This John is an Iron Worker in the Ship Yard and they are living in Hebburn, Durham. On the 1891 census, this Catherine is aged 29.

Also on the 1901 census, there is a John Sewell aged 47 from Carlisle married to Kate. This John is a Felt Hatter and they live in Caldewgate, Carlisle.

I would think that the former was probably Catherine Henry whose birth was registered in the second quarter of 1861 in Carlisle, which explains why she is not shown on the 1861 census.

If it is the other John and Kate to whom you are referring, then I think she was possibly a different Catherine/Kate born between 1855 and 1859 in Carlisle.
