Norman family of Leicester and Philadelphia - Help and Inspiration please
« on: Friday 31 July 09 12:11 UTC (UK) »

Hi all you Leicester Genealogical experts,

I am trying to identify a family group in Leicester who travelled to Philadelphia Pennsylvania arriving on the Octarara (Octanara) 16.10.1838. The ships manifest gives the group as

George Norman aged 45 Cordwainer
Elizabeth Norman aged 40
George aged 20
Ann aged 18
Female aged 16
Jane aged 14
Female aged 10
Charles aged 6
Mary aged 22
Thomas aged 12
Thomas Warner aged 19

Thomas Warner married Ann Norman before 1849 in Philadelphia.

Here is the same list again with dates from other sources (death certs etc)

George Norman b 1792 d 31/1/1856 Cordwainer G & E Norman 1856 1858 Phil Directories
Elizabeth Norman b 1792 d 25//3/1873 assumed wife of George
George b 1818 buried 24/1/2/1889
Ann b 1820 d N.K. as wife of Thomas Warner
Elizabeth b 1819 Leicester d 31/8/1863
Jane b 1824 d NK
Female b 1828 d NK
Charles b 15/12/1825 d 25/5/1908 married Thomas Warner's sister Selina
Mary b 1816 d KN
Thomas b 1819/1920 d KN
Thomas Warner b 24/5/1820 (Tiverton Devon) d 23/3/1914

The problem is how do we Identify the family in Leicester (or elsewhere) as they travel before the 1841 census is taken. There are two clues that point the family being from Leicester.
1. Elizabeth Norman's (1819) death cert gives her place of birth as Leicester England
2. Is is reported by the descendants of Thomas Warner and Ann Norman that Thomas followed his 'love' to America which implies he knew the the Norman's before they travelled to the USA.

Although Thomas is born in Devon, his father was there working for John Heathcote at the time, they also lived in Paris where Selina was born before returning to Leicester in about 1827.

The IGI does not give a clear family group that matches this one and it is possible that Elizabeth is not George Snrs first wife (or even second). The Warner's were Particular Baptists which also raises the possibility that these Norman's might also have been non-conformists.

If anyone has any ideas about where to look for early information that might help identify this group in the UK/Leicester I would be very grateful as would the US descendent's of the Norman family, my cousins.

Many thanks - Mark
