Mary Ashton - Gainsborough Area
« on: Wednesday 10 June 09 11:19 UTC (UK) »

I'm hoping someone out there can help me  Grin
I am looking for information on my Ancestor Mary Ashton
She was born c. 1663 in the Gainsborough
Daughter of George Ashton
She was married in Laneham Nottinghamshire in 1681
and sadly died at an early age in Laughterton c.1689 and was buried in Kettlethorpe.
I'm afraid i don't know anything about her childhood or her siblings.
I believe her father had quite a good living, due to the fact i have a will stating his father was a landowner and left him a sizeable income on death.
but i know nothing more

i have been given Mary's marriage to William Bellamy in 1681, but have no documentation nor names of witnesses.

Can anyone help
thankyou for taking time to read my plea!  Grin

Hi,  Cheesy
If the LDS hold films of Gainsborough Church for the period around 1663 you could order the film in for viewing[ do this at one of the Family History centres ]. You may be able thus to discover if she had siblings.

 If the source of the info you have about her marriage in 1681 is also on film you could check there and see who the witnesses were to the marriage.  Getting a look at the films/fiche of the originals  reassures you that what you have been told is correct- and sometimes there are additional nuggets of info.

The lists of films the LDS hold can be checked on familysearch site... I think the link is "Library".
The 17th C is quite a way back. hard to put flesh on people from then unless you get dead lucky

On the igi website FamilySearch.org if you type in Batch Number C011062 and father's name George ASHTON it shows Mary's and that of 5 others, one stating Margaret as mother. Of course there could be more than one George ASHTON in Gainsborough at that time but it might be of help.

   Very unlikely that a marriage this early will have any extra info I am afraid.
Only after 1754 when new legislation was passed are details of home parish of bride & groom and names & signatures of witnesses found.
 Like wise fathers names appear when it was changed to civil registration in 1837.

 As for her bith... 1663 Gainsborough father George.
This is on IGI and is an extracted record with the following all father George..
  Mary bpt 19 June 1663
  Bryan bpt 30 May 1666
 John bpt 3 Oct 1667
 George bpt 24 June 1669
 Anne bpt 28 Feb 1672
 John bpt 5 July 1677
  all Gainsborough.                Snap to Robert..... Smiley

Worth looking at those names and seeing if they can be found.

George ==> 24th june 1669
Mary ==> 19 june 1663
John (1) ==> 3rd October 1667
John (2) ==> 5th july 1676   * Mother given as Margaret
Anne ==> 28th february 1672
Bryan ==> 30th May 1666  Died: 16th july 1666

All except John just name the father as being George
i wondered if anyone might have access to PR's as the LDs is very dry and doesnt give me a definate connection

I have looked before... but i have no child being named Margaret. nor a Bryan, but all the others are more than comon - most people have these names, so i acnt actually point a finger and say with all certainty that: "These are mine!"

  Hi
  Same with baptisms the further back we go the less info we find.... I am still trying and struggling with the latin that some of this date are written in and all in one ledger it is hard to tell who died & who was baptised.

Anyway back to the Ashtons ....have you contacted the member of Ancestry who has Mary Ashton bap 1663 Gainsborough in their tree...?
It gives parents as George Ashton & Mary Toping who marry in Gainsborough in 1659. The tree then comes forward from Mary marrying until dying in childbirth with daughter Mary in 1689. The tree was updated late last year so the e-mail may still be contactable.
