1844 Brits working in Hungary & Germany
« on: Wednesday 10 June 09 13:10 BST (UK) »

My interest lies in picking  brains in regards to the history of why a man back in 1844 would traipse his pregnant wife and family across Europe. Would they have been well off? How would they have got to Germany and Hungary? If both my Obadiah’s had more children born overseas or wives that died overseas would the births/deaths have to be registered with a British embassy? If so where do I start looking?
Sorry this is so drawn out...but please could you help me unravel a bit of history.

What is known to me
Elizabeth Ames found on 1841 census aged 40 independent means with an Obadiah Ames spectacle maker .. my GGrandfather although the age is out by a few years? On the same page is his brother Edwin Ames an Engraver but living at a different address?
Obadiah William Ames/Amos Snr married Ann Smith in 1844 St Phillips Birmingham he is listed as a Powder flash maker
1851census Obadiah snr is living in Aston Birmingham as a gun barrel borer has a son Obadiah jnr aged 2. his year of birth abt 1849/50 born Mayorszag Pesth Hungary.
This son Obadiah William Ames born 1848 Mayorszag Pesth Hungary. Is my headache.

He married Louisa Orme  2 February 1868 St Pauls Balsall Heath. They had two children Enoch Ames & Emma Ames.
Cannot find a death for Louise Ames nee Orme b1850 Aston B’ham

Obadiah Ames jnr married 2nd wife Emma Orme 2 April 1876  St Andrews Church Birmingham. Cannot find a death for Emma Ames b 1856. Edgbaston B’ham

1881 census living with wife Emma and children Mile end Old Town Middlesex as a gas fitter.

Obadiah jnr was alive in 1888 as he attended his daughter Emma’s wedding.

1891 census Found Obadiah jnr in Derby as a professional singer living with an Elizabeth Ames born Ohio USA a singer.
Where Obadiah is listed as married, Elizabeth Ames is listed as married but if you look at the census some women are listed as Wife. So can I presume perhaps that Elizabeth is not is wife but a relative?

Obadiah William Ames professional singer aged 48 Death Canning Derby 12 January 1895 informant WIFE Mabel Ames! Which would give him a birth year of 1847.It’s definitely the right man but what is he doing with Mabel Ames?

Any advice gratefully and humbly accepted.

Consular birth records start in 1849, and even then it seems to have been optional. They weren't necessarily well off but it would have been related to Obadiah's trade-- lots of gun makers in Birmingham and he may have been working for a company linked to one in Hungary.

Mayorszag = Magyarország = Hungary
Pesth = Budapest.

I've been able to find a couple of extra records for him:
1871 - in Aston as "HAINES", with Emma, children, and his father. Birthplace just listed as "Hungary".
1874 Louisa Ames, d. 1874 Aston district aged 24 (freebmd).

Enoch James Ames (the son) married in 1897 in Birmingham but where is he in 1891 and 1901?
By 1911 he is in Aston with his wife and kids, and by the looks of things they should be around in 1901, but I can't spot him.

If in the 1891 census they are both lodgers/borders/visitors in another house, their relationship might be not clearly recorded. Relationship should be recorded relative to the head of household, which can make it confusing when you have more than one person from a family listed as visitors.

Possible situations:
1. Emma died (in England, mistranscribed, or overseas as family were travelling) between 1881 and 1891, and Obadiah remarried Elizabeth overseas.
2. Emma and Obadiah split up, Obadiah set up house with Elizabeth without marrying (Emma may have changed her surname)

Either way, "Elizabeth" and "Mabel" may well be the same person (she may have been Elizabeth Mabel/Mabel Elizabeth, or one might have been her stage name).

G'day jorose.
Thanks so much for finding Obadiah on the 1871 census..I was so excited I went straight into Ancestry and got the original census. Hard to believe he was under Haines. Thanks again for that, your an angel. I will look into the the Elizabeth Mabel angle.
Basically I have all the data I need for his two children Enoch and Emma who's mother is Louisa. Just having trouble finding step children. I know an Obadiah William was born to a EMMA  Ames in 1885.
It would also be nice to have a little history in regards to selling guns/making guns overseas as I think around that time there was a war of sorts going on in Europe. I wondered if anyone has any knowledge of how they would have travelled or how long it would have taken that kind of thing.
Really thankful thankyou Joy
