I wonder if anyone could suggest a good book or website that might discuss such things as life in rural Sussex around the 1800's- 1880's? Occupations, immigration, daily life, what was happening politically etc.

Are you looking for a particular part of Sussex. I have a pile of books about particular villages and areas but not sure I have ever come across a book about the whole of Sussex.

You could try:
The Victorian Country Childs by Pamela Horn, Sutton Publishing 1974
ISBN 0-7509-1499-8
It describes the varied aspects of country life in the Victorian era from a childs point of view. Drawing on a wide variewty of records such as Parliamentry papers, personal reminiscences, newspapers and other sources it describes living conditions, food, school life, work on the land, high days and holidays and the effects of agricultural policies on children, local and cottage industries plus the church and its influence and crime and punishment.
A very good back ground read

I have a book on the history of Brighton and Hove and a modern day book on Sussex but I dont have a history book on the whole of the county.
I too am interested as many of mine came from the Slaugham areas.

Actually looking at my list one very good book that gives a broad overall view of many aspects of life in Sussex is the Historical Atlas published by Phillimore. Its quite statistical but covers through the ages all sorts of subjects like geology, schools, occupations, crops etc etc etc and has useful graphs for each subject.
I'm just hinting to family that come Christmas I would love the new Kent one!

Thank you so much for all your suggestions. Looks like there is alot here to keep me going. I have only just started to research my family from Brightling & Burwash in Sussex (& Bethersden, Kent). So I do like to get a good understanding of their lives - I think sometimes it helps!

Hi again
If you had family in Burwash during the 19th century, the Victorian Village, the diaries of the Rev John Coker Egerton of Burwash 1857-1888 is a must.
He mentions lots of different residents from the village and as well as being a brilliant insight into the lives of these people the edition I have a copy of is full of references to records in the local record office and newspaper cuttings etc.

Hi Leslie,
Further to Kerry's Victorian Village, there is another J Egerton book called Sussex Folk and Sussex Ways which details life in and around Burwash.
I have an excellent book called 'A Sussex Life: The memories of Gilbert Sargent Countryman' which looks at his life from the 1880's in Catsfield.
Then I have a couple of Sussex Guides which are quite descriptive of towns/villages in Sussex and do include some stories. They are Blacks 1861 Guide to Sussex and The Kings England: Sussex by Arthur Mee.
I obtained them from a number of places, oxfam shops and off of ebay.

Hi Kerry
Just noticed beneath your postings the families that you are researching..Just thought I would mention that one of my Skinners (Mary Ann born 1816 in Brightling) married a Matthew Harmer in 1831, they appear living in Brightling & on the 1841 census. They immigrated in 1849 to Minnesota with their 10 small children (they had 17 in total!!) establishing their own "mini dynasty" in the USA. Is Matthew one of yours?
