Please could anyone advise me on how to link a Doctor Louis Ernest Seide Gelle, born in Mauritius circa 1880, qualified at Durham university in 1912, emigrated to Perth, Western Australia in 1914 & lived as an eminent doctor there - with - my husband's illegitimate father.
He, Norman Alexander Steedman was born in the Edinburgh maternity hospital in 1912 to Jane Nuthall from Burntisland. I think she was in service in Leith - 2 of her sisters were.
The only other info I have is that Ernest S Gelle (sic) wrote a letter given to the adoptive parents, disclaiming any further claim to his son.
Does the maternity hospital have records of their staff at this time? Wasn't it unusual to be born in hospital at this time?

Hello
Have you tried Googling Louis' name? There seem to be patents granted to him and records of his Presidency of the Alliance Francais in Western Australia etc ...
I imagine the answer is yes, but just in case ...

Thanks, Arranroots, but yes , I got a lot of my info by googling him. Would there be any Directories for 1912 mentioning doctors do you think?

Hard to know where to start really and I'm no expert on that area.
Have you tried to see whether Durham Uni alumni kept track of the doctor's movements after graduation?
You might find directory entries - I'm guessing the library would be the best place to ask.
This is too late for bastardy records in England but there might be some legal documents pertaining to birth expenses. Again, not sure of Scottish procedures. Have you found a will, just in case he regretted his actions and left something to the son?
The 1911 census might give a clue- but you have a little wait til that comes online.
It's nearly 100 years ago though, so worth finding out whether there are any maternity records still existing - I imagine you have the birth certificate?
I hope someone else has idea!

Me again!
According to the Medical Directories, Louis didn't qualify until 20th May 1912, from the Uni of Durham (as you mention above). There's an S after the date - I wonder if he did a postgrad qualification in Scotland?
Might be worth contacting Edinburgh University to see whether they have any record of him?
