Need help for first search in Ireland!
« on: Wednesday 10 June 09 14:11 UTC (UK) »

Hello!
Well after patiently waiting for aaaaages, 1911 census has now revealed my grandfather's birth place as New Ross Co.Wexford.  - New Ross isn't listed under the Wexford County on the board for some reason?
I need help!
All I know is his birth year of 1885, he first appears in the 1911 census, he marries my grmother in 1907 and states his father as Tom Kehoe Shoemaker, deceased at that time.  His age in 1911 is 26 so confirms age on marriage cert born 1885.d.
How can I start researching Irish records please, any help much appreciate
thanks

you should find details on the Civil Index at familysearch : http://pilot.familysearch.org/recordsearch/start.html#p=2;t=searchable;c=1408347

this covers records (BMDs) from 1864 and non-Catholic marriages from 1845

you can order a cert using the index information from the GRO - www.groireland.ie

Thanks for the link Shane,
Unfortunately there seems to be several Patrick Kehoes registered for births and I can't pin it down, esp as 1 dies later in the same area. are there any other indexes, particularly baptisms online?
thanks

another question, sorry, the link you gave is it the complete indexes or just partial? I noted it was a pilot site.
thanks

sorry,  no on-line parish records available for that county that I know of at the moment.

The Irish Family History Foundation has transcripts for many Irish Counties - but not Co. Wexford.

It may be a case of ordering a few certs a seeing if the father's name and occupation match up.

the Registration district for that area is also New Ross - and includes a large area of the county as well as the town.

should be a complete index - pilot system...

1911 Census data for Co. Wexford is included on the National Archives website at : http://www.census.nationalarchives.ie/

maybe there was connected Kehoe family still living in New Ross ?

Hello Tom
Many many thanks for the information, as I have only just learned of the birthplace I hadn't got as far as looking at the Great War info so thanks for that, I also might not have thought of it!
I have now found that Patrick had 2 brothers from the 1911 census both in Glamorgan, Thomas and Edward.
I found a death record on freebmd for an Edward Kehoe so your info may fit with that, I'll have a check on it.
thanks

Have several  Kehoe in New Ross Roots 1901 with a variety of jobs,

Patrick; Draper
Peter; Salter
Margaret; Nurse
John; Shoemaker
John; Publican
Samuel; Bacon factory manager
John; Grocer/pub
Deborah; Ex teacher
But no Thomas a shoemaker.

There were 7 Kehoe families living on the one street, Lacken.

No mention of Thomas in my 1911.

Hi There I am married and live here in New Ross!!!   It helps if you know the D>E>D> (Electoral Districts.) New Ross is divided in to New Rosss Urban & New Ross rural.  Also Whitemore.  Now if you search the 1901 census on line again for Co. Wexford, try tapping in whitemore for the d.e.d. and several Kehoes will come up for Ryleen and Lacken New Ross, Co. Wexford.  These are adjoining townlands About 2-3 miles from New Ross..  Infact kehoes of Ryleen are related to my husband  you will find a Patrick kehoe Farmer in Ryleen and also for Lacken.  They were related.

Hope this helps.

Hello Summerhill,  ooooer I may have made contact with a distant "rellie" ! !

Yippee!   Hello and thank you for the information I have no prior knowledge at all about Ireland records so all info is very welcome and obviously very useful.  All I know for sure is that my grfather states on the 1911 that his place of birth is New Ross Co.Wexford and that from his marriage cert his father is Tom Kehoe a Shoemaker, deceased (by 1907).  He also has a brother Thomas and Edward both older than him who state in the 1911 the same place of birth.  So I think I do have to find the family if I can in the 1901.  and possibly try for birth certs or baptism records.
Thanks again
