Completed.Cannot Transfer List of Certificates - brain gone now, please help.
« on: Wednesday 10 June 09 16:27 BST (UK) »

Hi,help please,

I have scanned all my Certificates and stored them in a folder on my PC.

I have the originals in a ledger and would like to be able to copy the alphabetical list of certificates from my PC into a Word Document so that I can then print a copy off to put in the front of my ledger.

I have pulled up the list of certs to view on my  PC and then tried to copy & paste into a Word Document but it will not work.

I can't bear the thought of trying to type it all out (there's about 105 certs and I'm a one-fingered typist.

I know there must be a way of transferring the list, to enable me to make a copy of it, but I don't know how and my brain has now gone dead.

Can anyone think of a way around this please?

Hoping

Barbara.

I assuming you have the list in some graphics\pictorial document. If so try

1. Press the "print screen" button
2. In word do "edit" "paste" and the picture should appear.

Hi, thanks for your reply.

I have tried that method but because there are over 100 certs the viewing list takes up 3 screen columns so that when I ' Print Screen' and 'edit/Paste' etc, I get one full column and half of another.

I would just like to be able to print the whole list off but I cannot see a way of doing it apart from sitting and trying to type it as it shows on screen. At the speed I type I'd need a week!!

I don't know if I'm explaining this properly, I'm a Tech Ignoramus I'm afraid.

thanks for trying to help me anyway

Hi Barbara,

There's one method that may be a start if you use FireFox. It won't do everything you want but it is a start.

1. Open explorer and explore to the folder you want a list of files from.

2. Copy the location of that folder.

This may be in different places depending on your system but you are looking for something like:

C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\My Documents\Ancestry

3. Open FireFox and enter:

file:\C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\My Documents\Ancestry

You should be able to paste the C:\Documents and Settings\Paul\My Documents\Ancestry bit.

You should be able to copy that display and paste it into word but for me it comes out strange. If you can work with Excel you may prefer to paste it into that and play around with it first.

If you don't use FireFox we'll have to think of something else as trying that with IE certainly doesn't work.

I found this as well for printing folder lists - it's a bit more complicated, but just follow the instructions...

http://forums.pcpitstop.com/index.php?showtopic=158901

I googled 'print folder list' and got a number of free utility matches back, you could try some of those as well.

I have also just googled "copy folder list to word" and there are a number of responses but you'll need to be comfortable with using DOS prompts! (Haven't done that for 20 years...)

Best of luck!

I tried this and it seems reasonably easy to use.

http://www.segobit.com/adp.exe

It is shareware so you will be nagged but I am sure you can live with that.

It creates a text file and you can select what details you want next to each file. Just uncheck all of the columns and you will get just the files.

Using the DOS method:

1) Start >> Run and type: cmd in the box and press OK.  A DOS screen shoud appear.
2) You need to use the CD (change directory) command to get to the correct location.  If your photos are in the folder My Pictures then type this full pathname:

cd  "C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name\My Documents\My Pictures"

If when you open the DOS screen it says you are in:

C:\Documents and Settings\Your Name

then this is a relative path and you can then type:

cd my documents\my pictures

3) Once you are in the correct location type:

dir

this will list the files in the folder.  If all your files end in .jpg then type the following command at the command prompt:

dir /b  *.jpg  > list.txt

This will put a list of files into the file list.txt.

In your Word document you can then insert the file list.txt.

Type the command exit to close your DOS session.

Hi Everyone,

Sorry to be late saying 'Thank you' but the Topic appeared to be locked earlier on an I couldn't gain access.

Paul, I'm afraid I havn't got Firefox so I was unable to give your suggestion a 'go' but thanks for trying to help me.

Tracy, I looked at the sites you mentioned and I got a bit confused with the instructions - I'm not that clever on the PC yet but UI appreciate your efforts.

David, my folders containing the certificates that I would like to make a list of is in 'My Documents'>Family History> Certificates etc.

Downside, I have sent you a PM.

Many thanks to you all for your time and patience in trying to help me sort this problem out.

Barbara.

I would second Firefox and it's add-ons for enabling this.  There is a great table2clipboard facility which might do this - it allows copying from dearch pages and then pasting into WORD OR eXCEL.
