1869 pub registers.COMPLETED.
« on: Monday 06 July 09 08:11 UTC (UK) »

I have a birth certificate for my grandfather, Henry Arthur Bristow born June 1869. He was born in Norton Folgate.
His father is listed as George Bristow. Licensed victualer" Is there any way I can find out what pub he had? Or is that asking too much in that era?
His wife ran a Coffee shop for years in Hackney Road.

Kevan's London pubs website is a good place to start.
Here's the Spitalfields page http://deadpubs.co.uk/LondonPubs/Spitalfield/index.shtml

Howvere I couldn't find any mention of a George Bristow in that area around the 1870 period.

Where were they living in 1871?

Thank you Shaun, I will try that site.
George and Sarah were living at 37 Aylesbury St. Finsbury in the 1871 census, he is listed there as a Coffee house keeper (was one for many years).

1869 was an interesting year as it was the first year in which beer house keepers had to register their premises as licensed instead of just having an annual two guinea beer house license.

Although most of them initially paid the extra fees it had two effects.  Firstly although they were still only licensed to sell beer they started to call themselves licensed victuallers.  Secondly many of them, who actually only sold beer from the front room of their house could no longer afford the licence and within a few years gave up.

Have youu looked at the 1861 census?

etc (many more hits for him).

George Bristow, trading as George Watson, now coffee-house keeper in London, previously of the Myddleton Arms of Norton Folgate...
(he was a bankrupt, and at one time in Horsemonger-lane Gaol in Surrey! Also known as George Britten).

Could this be yours? Was an address in Norton Folgate given for Henry's birth?

Wow ! I am shocked! Henry's birth certificate is very faint , it looks like 30. High St. Norton Folgate.
I do know his father came from Hertfordshire. and married Sarah Terrell.
I wasn't able to find him in the 1861 census.
That is so interesting, is there any way to prove it is right.?
Thank you everyone for your impute.
Ann.
Sorry, getting pretty confused. Henrys parents were George and Sarah Jane (Day). His grandparents were George and Sarah (Terrell)

Don't panic too much about the bankruptcy.  It wasn't very unusual amongst small business men in those days.  About a tenth of the population of the country would be bankrupt today under the rules that they used then.

You should be able to work out how long he spent in gaol from the various entries in the London Gazette.  It is difficult to say without knowing the details.

Number 30 was the King & Queen.

The Middleton Arms was number 38

Having another look at the London Gazettes, the one mentioned first circa 1862 was not yours; he was George Bristowe at RG9/316 59/32 in 1861 (address matches up). The later one (aka George Watson and George Britten) could still be yours; I suspect this may be a different man as none of the addresses overlap.
