Yates in Leicester from 1871
« on: Friday 20 November 09 01:07 UTC (UK) »

I have been chasing my Yates family history for some time now and have a pleasing amount of information.
1871 Census 28 Northumberland St, Leicester
Caroline, Yates, Widow, Head, 44, Formerly Shoe Fitter, Leicester
Mary A, Yates, dau, 21, Boot Flouverist(Huh), Leicester
William, Yates, son, 19, Boot and Shoe Rivetter, Leicester
Thomas, Yates, 14, Boot and Shoe Rivetter, Leicester
Emma J, Yates, dau, 11, Scholar, Leicester

Caroline’s husband Thomas had died earlier.

The three younger children travelled to Australia but I am keen to find what happened to Mary Ann Yates.  I have found no further (later) record of her, despite searching.
Can anyone help with information please?
Thanks
Dave

Hi Dave

I am a Yates from Leicester (originally) and have quite a bit of detail of my direct line back to George Yates b.1800. I think I know about all George's descendants, though I can't confirm his siblings or parents - there are at least two candidates to be his father!
I have had a brief look for your Mary Ann (at work - we've had no internet connection at home this week), and while there are one or two possible marriages on BMD, I was unable to track any likely ones.
Yates is not a very common name in Leicester, so if your deceased Thomas came from a Leicester family, he was probably a cousin at some distance or other! Do you have any details further back?
Let me know if I can help further.

regards

Richard

Hi Richard,
Thanks for the response. I know a bit back to 1815. I need more about Thomas Yates b about 1795.
I suspect yours and my families are not closely related:

Thomas Yates is was from Tamworth, Staffordshire. He married Ann White in All Saints Church, Leicester on 6 January 1815.  Both Thomas and Ann were from this parish, implying that Thomas had been living there for some time. Need more information on Thomas!!

The first Census record of their family is in. All Saints Parish records show that Thomas and Ann had had at least three other children who had died very young.

1841 Census, Long Lane
First Name, Surname, Relationship, Age, Profession, Birthplace
Thomas, Yates, 50, Shoemaker, Not Leicester
Ann, Yates, 45, Leicester
Ann, Yates, 20, Worsted Factory, Leicester
Thomas, Yates, 15, Framework knitter, Leicester
William, Yates, 10, Trimmer, Leicester
Mary, Yates, 10, Leicester
Joseph, Yates, 5, Leicester
Elisabeth, Yates, 5, Leicester

All Saints Register shows the baptisms of nine children and deaths of three, but there is no apparent record of actual birth dates. Joseph and Elisabeth, shown as 5 years old on June 6 1841(the Census date) could have been anywhere between 5 and 9 years old, thus born between 1831 and 1836.

There is a burial of Elizabeth Yates recorded for All Saints Church on 13 June 1841 (a week after the Census).  She was noted as being 5 years old.  Apart from the spelling of her name, the details would seem to fit with the family.

Records from the All Saints Register
James, baptised , 12/11/1815, Elbow Lane
Thomas, baptised , 7/1/1818, Sanvey Gate, buried, 25/7/1819
Ann, baptised, 22/6/1822, Sanvey Gate
Mary, baptised, 27/6/1822, Sanvey Gate, died, 16/11/1824, Elbow Lane
Thomas, baptised, 27/7/1824, Elbow Lane
William, baptised, 23/11/1826, Elbow lane
Mary, baptised, 18/3/1829, Elbow lane
Joseph, baptised, 3/7/1831, Elbow Lane
Samuel , baptised , 8/9/1833, Elbow Lane,  died, 4/5/1835, Elbow Lane
Elisabeth, born, (After mid 1834 but before 1851 Census) (possibly 1836),
Elizabeth, died, (13 Jun 1841), (Long Lane)

In 1835 the family was still living in the All Saints Parish but by 30 March 1851 had moved to 32 Craven Street.

This gives us the best estimates of the birth years of Thomas (1793) and Ann (1796). Subsequent to the 1851 Census we have no further records of Thomas and Mary or any of their children other than Thomas.

1851 Census32 Craven St,
Thomas, Yates, Head, Married, 58, Cordwainer , Staffordshire, Tamworth
Ann, Yates, Wife, 55, Seamer, Woollen and Cotton, Leics
William, Yates, Son, 24, Trimmer , Leics, All Saints
Mary, Yates, Dau, 22, Hanker of Yarn , Leics, All Saints

Thomas and Caroline Yates

Thomas and Mary’ son, Thomas, married Caroline Ward on 17 July 1848 before the Leicester County Registrar.

1851 Census26 Northumberland St
Rebecca, Ward, Head, Widow, 56, School Mistress, Children, St Margaret’s
Emma, Ward, dau, 16, Mender of Hosiery, St Margaret’s
Harriet, Ward, dau, 10, St Margaret’s
Thomas, Yates, Head, 26, Framework Knitter, Glover, St Margaret’s
Caroline, Yates, Wife, 23, St Margaret’s
Mary Anne, Yates, dau, 1, St Margaret’s

By the time of the 1861 Census (April 7), Thomas had died leaving his widow Caroline with four children.  The youngest, Emma J Yates was born on 1 October 1860, indicating that the earliest that Thomas could have died would have been about January 1860.  Thomas and Caroline also had sons William (born 6 October 1851) and Thomas (born 1 June 1856).

1861 Census 26 Northumberland St,
Caroline, Yates, Widow, 34, Mangler of linen, St Margaret’s, Leicester
Mary A, Yates, dau, 11, St Margaret’s, Leicester
William, Yates, son, 9, Scholar , St Margaret’s, Leicester
Thomas, Yates, son, 5, Scholar, St Margaret’s, Leicester
Emma J, Yates, dau, 1, St Margaret’s, Leicester
Emma J, Richards, Widow, sister, 25, Worsted mill hand, St Margaret’s, Leicester
Harriet, niece, 1, St Margaret’s, Leicester

1871 Census 28 Northumberland St,
Caroline, Yates, Widow, Head, 44, Formerly Shoe Fitter, Leicester
Mary A, Yates, dau, 21, Boot Flouverist???, Leicester
William, Yates, son, 19, Boot and Shoe Rivetter, Leicester
Thomas, Yates, 14, Boot and Shoe Rivetter, Leicester
Emma J, Yates, dau, 11, Scholar, Leicester

Of Thomas and Caroline Yates children, William and Thomas died in Melbourne, Australia, but what became of Mary is uncertain.  Emma married a Thomas Johnson. They migrated to Australia in the late 1880s but returned to England.

Please let me hear if there is anything we have in common.  The above is only a summary.
Dave

Hi Dave
There is a Thos Yeats christened 19 May 1793, son of Thomas Yeats and Ann, showing on IGI for Tamworth. There is also a Thomas Yates, christened 17 Jan 1755, son of John. These look possibles for your Thomas and his father.
My earliest "confirmed" ancestor is Geo Yates born 9 Feb 1800, son of Richd. and Ann Yates. George was christened in St Margarets. Although I can't prove which Richard this is, it looks likely that my Yates line goes further back in Leicester area.
On that basis, it would have to be further back again for us to be connected!

regards

Richard

Thanks Richard, that certainly looks promising.

I'll check it out.
