In 1901, I have found a John Hall (Ref: RG13; Piece: 252; Folio: 189; Page: 1.) - Holborn, London.
He was born in Cornwall but can anybody interperate/decipher the place?

Hi
it looks as if the enumerator might well have misread the original household schedule. It looks like Portschu but that's not really Cornish!
The nearest that I can come up with are Poldhu on the Lizard and Portloe.
It looks like the family were abroad for a good few years but he might be on the 1851 or 1861 to check

Thanks people.
The suggestion of Portscatho looks the best bet. As Gadget mentioned it ain't straightforward in 1851 and 1861.
I think we'll call it quits there, because if it is Portscatho, it's the "wrong" John Hall anyway
Thanks again Mike

Hi again
How did you get to him? Have you followed his children back or are you looking for a collateral branch of the family?

Is he John Renfree/Remphry Hall ...s/o George Watts Hall.... I hope so as I have been trying to follow him the whole day. I cannot see him in 1871 unless he is the pauper/tailor ...
He is on IGI baptised St Gluvias ...which is part of Penryn.

Hi Deb
All his children seem to have been born abroad so maybe he was away from the UK in 1871.

John Renfree Hall, born 1849, Penryn, Cornwall. Son of George Watts Hall (1817) and Mary Renfree (1820).
Gadget - you've found his children . Do tell, PLEASE !
And if you want another puzzle find his sisters/half sister after 1881. Rosanna Hall (1850); Jane Hall (1854) and Priscilla Menhennet (1861)

Looking at 1901 census, if this is the right John Hall he obviously was stationed in Ireland abt 1870 to have married Mary.J.R. and given birth to Annie, born 1874 Newbridge, Kildare. Then the other Children followed and are born India, so he was stationed there too. Mary and John have left home by 1901 and only Stephen/William are at home and married daughter Annie.
1891 Census is same family as married daughter Annie and husband Frederick are there too.
1881 the family could still be in India and John went on ahead.
I congratulate you Deb for finding 1891 as it was badly transcribed. Trish
