I presume Gadget was tallking about the children on the 1891 census above Deb USA posted Smiley
All born East Indies

Trish

I was talking about the 1901 census that was the original reference with the strange place of birth. This is the same family as on the 1891 that Deb found. So if it is the correct person, then it will be Penryn - I wonder if there is a small place there that might look like Portschu Undecided

No prob, Trish  Smiley I was just confirming the same person on the two censuses.

I'm off to look at a large scale map now. I did a detailed study of Cornwall down to enumeration district level in the 1990s and I thought I knew all the Cornwall places but this has got me baffled  Roll Eyes Undecided

I have my doubts about Sgt John Hall in 1891.

In 1881 "My" John Hall appeared to be in the navy as Ships Corporal - born in Penryn

Could he have switched services - to the 1st Border Regiment - and been promoted to Sergeant by 1891?
Doubtful!
Also in 1891 his birthplace is, I now think, Portscatho.

John is 54 on the 1901 and 44 on the 1891. Wife is Mary on both. In 1901, she is aged 48 and born Londonderry. Children - William, 15, and Steph(en), 13, both born India. Also a daughter, Annie Austin, 27 b. Ireland, Newbridge, Kildare.

William and Stephen match up on both censuses.

I would say that they are the same family.

Is the 1881 your John?

Morning all Smiley

Have tried to find John Hall bc 1848 in Porthc***/Portloe in earlier censuses but no luck yet. If we can find him then we know that there are 2 seperate Johns ...one born Penryn the other portwhatever Grin

John Renfree Hall was christened in St gluvias .... a town in Penryn.

ummmm

In 1871 in the Falmouth workhouse I have found Rosina Hall , it's the same place as John Hall that I found in a previous post

Is he John Renfree/Remphry Hall ...s/o George Watts Hall.... I hope so as I have been trying to follow him the whole day. I cannot see him in 1871 unless he is the pauper/tailor ... Undecided
He is on IGI baptised St Gluvias ...which is part of Penryn.

March q 1847  - John vol 9 page 226

One Truro:
Dec q, 1848 - John vol 9 page 298

One St Germans:
June q, 1848 - John Henry Smith vol 9 Page ?

Could be a BMD transcription error, Deb  - I'll have a look at the full GRO listing.

Full GRO  index is definitely Remphry  so it's a FREeeBMD error.

The spelling of names change quite a lot the further back you go depending on who wrote it down,  so I'm not sure but it is definitely Remphry on the GRO index.
