Or perhaps he served his apprenticeship in that area and met a local girl, marrying in her parish?

Or perhaps whilst an apprentice, he made a friend of another apprentice and fell in love with her sister (happened in our ancestry).

Also - we had blacksmiths and ironmongers.

Hey Pat  Cheesy

Aaaah!!  he may have had to go there to get an apprenticeship.....good thinking 99.

But....you would have thought that he could have had more opportunity in Suffolk,   oh well,  more mystery....

Good thinking.  Wink

Not sure I'm correct about saying apprentices weren't allowed to marry. I did have some information about Watermen apprentices not being allowed to marry, which seemed to make sense as mine did, but in a church in no way connected to bride or groom. I cannot find anything definitive about it online.

Thomas Roberts & Mary Ann Walder 1864 Marriage

Hi

It seems to be a regular occurrence in Suffolk for mothers maiden names to be used as firstnames for children.

I have a Newman Jacques in my tree, son of Thomas Jacques and his wife Sarah Jacques formerly Newman.

I have a Lorken Wallaker in my tree and Lorken is a very unusual firstname but there are a few families with that surname in that corner of Suffolk which is near Haverhill.

Regarding apprenticeships, you will see from this link that it was not uncommon for apprentices to be forbidden to marry during the period of their indentures:

Hiya Coombs  Wink

I agree,   some unusual surnames out there,  and the mothers surname rule is very obvious in my tree too.

Thanks Greensleeves,  very interesting....I wonder if they should enforce that today  Grin Grin Grin
