I need a little help along the way !!
|
Greetings from NZ
I'm trying to trace a George Street, possibly b. 23 Sep 1854 at Nettlebed, Oxfordshire. His parents were Thomas Street and Mary Ann Street born Barrett.
It's a difficult name to research as any search results in all the Streets/Roads in the County!
I have tried FreeBMD and Ancestry without luck (so far). The details I have were found on a note written by an aged relative, but the details seem fairly precise so I'm reluctant to discard this possible lead.
He married in NZ in 1896, so I was hoping to find him in at least 1861 UK Census, but no luck there either.
Thanks for any help John B

This looks the most likely I can see for his birth
Jul/Aug/Sep 1854 Henley ref 3a 432 George Street
So a birth cert would confirm parentage, give mums maiden name, address where he was born, dads occupation etc
I cant see a Street/Barrett marriage in Oxfordshire, nor a Thoams/Mary Ann on 1851

G Grandfather - Albert Spencer 1861 - 1926

I've just looked at the Ipsden PR transcript - courtesy of OFHS.
Whilst there is at least one STREET family baptising children around 1854, there is no sign of George.

The Nettlebed PR transcript is on the same CD...
Absolutely no STREETs being baptised up to 1853 (when the transcript finishes )
No George in Henley St Mary or Henley Holy Trinity. I suspect you are going to have to buy the cert to see whether it is your man.

As the 1861 census had him born in Henley, I checked Henley PRs as well - both St Marys & Holy Trinity - he's not there either.
Looks like you'll have to send for the birth certificate.
It does seem from the 1861 census that Mary Ann was unmarried - if Thomas had died, surely she would have described herself as a widow, and if he had just tootled off and left them, she would still have been 'married'. Unless, of course, they never married & she just called herself Street for convenience, but never was!!
By the way, I sympathise with the difficulties in searching for Street - I have Bishop in my tree and, not only do I end up with all the Bishops (as in Bishop of York etc)) there ever were, wherever they were, but, round here there are lots of villages with the word Bishop in them (Bishop Burton etc), so I get a double whammy!!

Sympathies here too You would have thought Edmonds/Edmunds was easy - but not till you see pages and pages of all and sundry going on in Bury St Edmunds that comes up on any search!!
