The Abbey, Abingdon
« on: Tuesday 19 May 09 13:50 UTC (UK) »

I'm hoping someone out there knows the town of Abingdon and will find this question easy to answer.  There is someone in my husband's family tree who was living in 1891 in The Abbey, Parish of St. Nicholas, Abingdon.  I know she wasn't a nun (!) so wondered if these were almshouses - she was an 81-year-old widow in 1891 so seems a likely candidate if they were almshouses.  Any info on that address would be welcome.  I've tried googling and, whilst there is reams of stuff on the abbey/church, I've failed to find anything about why "The Abbey" would be the address of ordinary folk.

Many thanks,
Gill

Abingdon Abbey was dissolved in 1526.  St. Nicholas church is the old church just outside the front gate of the Abbey grounds.  The almshouses are in the churchyard of St. Helens and there is a small almshouse in Ock Street.

Can't help with her address being "The Abbey"

Hi - although the abbey was dissolved in the reformation,  the buildings remain and have had several uses over the years,  a lot of the time they were just used as dwellings,  though part of them were a brewery.  I think it was quite a poor area.  It has since been restored.

Many thanks, Sue and DebbieG, for clearing that up.  It seems that "The Abbey" was just an ordinary address in the town.  Must get there one day and have a look at Abingdon - it certainly looks interesting on the websites.

Thanks again, Gill
