Hi,
Sometime ago I posted a request for help in finding James SMITH born 1844-1848 Cornwall possible Redruth but with no luck - I have since still being trying unsuccessfully to trace him on 1851, 1861 and 1871 census
His father named Thomas Smith miner was deceased by 1880. On OPC site Cornwall the only son of a Thomas miner is James SMITHERAM 29/5/1844 Breage, Cornwall.
1851 SMITHERAM family paupers Redruth Union Workshouse HO/07/1915 Mary Ann 30 widowed James 7 & Elizabeth 7. Could this be him
I really would like to complete this part of my family tree but I seem to be getting nowhere!!
James SMITH married & living in Wales from 1880, have him on 1881c born Drouth, Cornwall 1891c age 45, Cornwall & 1901c age 56, Cornwall.
Waited patiently for 1911 Wales Census hoping I would a least have some idea as to where in Cornwall James SMITH was born but alas he's only given his birthplace as Cornwall aged 67 (1844), still living in the same place since 1881!!
James used the middle name of Henry on his marriage certificate 1880 & all of his children's birth records 1882 - 1886 but not entered on any of the censuses
Would appreciate any offer of help or advice

Hi Ladyhawk,
1911 Wales is now online
I suspect I see him in Wales and get a hit on born Cornwall, I get no match when I enter Redruth or Drouth. Drouth is generally a term for Redruth. Let us know if anything further is listed once you have seen the entry.
Cheers Kris

Hi Kriss,
Have the original 1911 Wales Census and it only gives James' place of birth as Cornwall - I know this is the right James as all other information matches with previous censuses for Wales from 1881 and his marriage in 1880
Have looked at the BMD site there are two entries for Redruth James Smith listed which would fit in with birth 1844. If I can't find him on 1851, 1861 & 1871 censuses - my only hope is to order one of these and see if I get lucky - at least I have his father's name and occ.

Hi,
Am I clutching at straws here
Did James Smith lie about his age, was he far older than he said, his children were named William Henry & Mary Jane
On FreeCEN there's a James with father of Thomas SMITH
1841 HO107/140/15/33/16
Thomas 55 Quarryman Jane 45 John 15 William 12 Mary 8 JAMES 6
1851 HO107/1898/108/5/17
Thomas SMITH 65 St Teath Jane 56 " John 28 Tintagel William 23 " JAMES 15
1861
Jane SMITH 66 St. Teath Widowed Jane Hockin g/dau. 11
As far as I know James was only married once

We have 2 baptisms in 1843 - Gwennap and Illogan are both in the Redruth district.
James SMITH 5 Nov 1843 Gwennap parents William and Mary. James SMITH 29 Oct 1843 Illogan parents William and Sarah
William and Mary are in Redruth in 1841
This is probably the St Germans district one
James SMITH 16 Jan 1842 St John parents William and Ann
This is probably the St Austell District one
James SMITH 26 Sep 1847 Mevagissey parents James and Mary
alas no father Thomas

Kris,
Thanks for birth info.
Will I ever unravel the mystery of James Smith before 1880 - I'm beginning to think not
His wife has proved to be just as difficult to find before 1880 although she was born in Wales
I'll keep trying though
