Irish Census docs can I make them larger to print?

The Irish census docs are barely readable when printed.
As they only appear to open in one format, does any one know if I can edit part of the page and enlarge and print ?

Some counties of Irish Census records 1911 are available at nationalarchieves.ie .  They can be enlarged very easily on the site.  The 1901 Census should be availabe before Christmas 2009 and all census records are free.

going on from Charles, you can also view and enlarge the census doc on screen then do a print screen
(ctrl+ PrtSn) into an editing programs  then clip back to the bit you want. save as a jpg image. You can then paste into word and add the census source details

I've not had any problems printing from the NA.ie website.


this also works well also with newspaper articles

Sorry to be so slooooooooooooow but I have the census enlarged on the screen but not sure what to do next !!!!Could you please run it through for me  Smiley Smiley Smiley I do enlarge it but it always prints out small.!!! help

If you have the "Print Preview" option, then use that, and you can scale the page to make it bigger.

You get print preview on you browser (its on both Firefox and Explorer) from the "file" button on top left of your browser window.

In other words print preview lets you see what you are about to print, and you can make it bigger or smaller and still see what will print.

Thanks for this but the print preview option does not come up when I have the Wexford census form on screen Shocked Roll Eyes

I mostly use Firefox (but also works with Explorer) and if you go to 'File' on toolbar, then click, one of the options is 'print preview.'

This is true but the census doc then opens in another screen which does not have the print peview option for some reason

here's an option you can use in Adobe Acrobat (the standard pdf file viewer) to print sections of the census form - i.e. zoomed in

view the census page in your browser
select the 'save a copy' button on the acrobat toolbar
   (it is usually just above the form, on the left)
save the form to a location on your PC e.g. to my documents

double click on the previously saved file (in My computer or explorer) to open it in Adobe acrobat
zoom and and scroll to the location required
select the print.. option on the file menu
on the print range settings, select the 'current view' option
the preview to the right will now show the zoomed in view instead of the full page
press OK to print

if you use his option the printout contains exactly what you see on the screen

you may be able to access the same print method in your web-browser using the print button on the toolbar just above the census form

OK you have aparently got print preview to open - look along the top of that screen that has opened in print preview and along the top of the toolbar there are a number of options, one is "Scale", you can make that anything you like, make whatever figure is showing bigger and you will see the document on the screen become bigger, juggle "scale till its big enough for you, then "print"
