New York Immigration Help
« on: Thursday 11 June 09 21:33 UTC (UK) »

Hi Everybody,

I'm sorry if this question has been asked before but I'm a complete novice when it comes to US records - I assume that when people arrived in New York they had to go through immigration control and give some details of who they were, where they'd come from, why they had come, who they were going to stay with etc.  Can I ask how you find out this information?  Is it online somewhere?  I know that the passenger lists for ships to New York exist and are on Ancestry but having seen a few of these passenger lists I can see that most of this kind of information isn't available on them so I thought there must be other immigration documents somewhere.  Thanks for any information.

Regards

Michelle

What is the approximate timeframe?

Try http://www.ellisisland.org/
and before this
http://www.castlegarden.org/

There are other records but those are the best known

Hi Stonechat,

Thanks for the quick reply and the links - I'll check those out.  Most of the relatives I'm looking for emigrated from Scotland from the 1920s on to some even in the 1950s.

Regards

Michelle

Edit: The Ellis Island website only has records up until 1924 so it seems I won't be able to find what I'm looking for  Sad  Thanks again.

Hi

For the timeframe you've outlined - outgoing passengers from British Isles on ships 1890 to 1960 are at

http://www.ancestorsonboard.com/

This is part of FindMyPast. Registration and searching is free. To view full details of a passenger list, though, costs money!

The information available on manifests, can be less or more and depends on which period they travelled and which laws of immigration/entry were in place at the port of entry at the time  - this dictated the required information on a manifest.

The outgoing passenger list (from UK) may hold different information from the ingoing (to New York). Also be aware, that people travelling may not have always sailed direct for New York for various reasons  so you may find your people sailing  for example, into Canada and crossing over the border into the US or entering US  via Boston MA, or Philadelphia PA - before making their way to New York (if NY was their destination, that is).

Cheers

Hi AMBLY,

Thanks so much for the information and the link.  I did a few searches on that website and managed to find some information on someone I'm looking for (as you can see from my thread in the US Lookups board - link below) but as you say I'd need to pay to get some credits to view it and I'm not sure if that's worth doing or not.  Thanks again.

Regards

Michelle

There are databases at both Ancestry and Footnote.com which have some naturalization documents. Both are pay sites. I'm not familiar with what years are available at Footnote but some of the databases at Ancestry go into the 1970s and beyond. Some of the Ancestry databases have actual documents and some are just indices. As far as I know the Ancestry databases cover a limited number of states.

Hi Jacquie,

Thanks for the information.  It looks like both footnote and Ancestry have some full naturalisation documents but it's only for a few states and pretty hit and miss - New York is one of the states covered.  The information available for the naturalisation index cards seems fuller and I've managed to locate a few index cards for the people I'm looking for but they only give you name, address, age, date of issue, petition number and signature (although it is lovely to see the real signatures of ancestors!)  It looks like the fuller naturalisation documents with extra information aren't readily available online and I'd love to see the full documents for the index cards I've found - would the only way to see them be by going to records offices in New York or ordering copies?  Thanks again for the help.

Regards
