Hi Chrissie
The death date is close to the date of a railway accident at Darlington
My Grandmother died when I was about 5-8 I remember the train journey we took as my Mum had a message saying Isabella was ill....The train crashed at Darlington..So the year of her death must be about mid 60s The Railways Archive site http://www.railwaysarchive.co.uk/ shows three accidents on the York Darlington line in the mid sixties
York 15 Jun 1965 Thirsk 31 July 1967 Darlington 11 Dec 1968
I can only find one Isabel Liddle in the death registrations for these periods: she is Deaths Jul-Sep 1967 Isabel Liddle 76 S. Shields 1a 712
Clutching at straws it is vaguely possible that the index has recorded the age wrongly as 76 instead of 56.
All the best

Who is Norman Carne & why do we have his photo?

The only one I found was Isabella N Liddle 64 died MarQ1968 NewcastleT 1B 255, unfortunately it's a year out with the train crash but might be worth a phone call just to rule it out.

Assuming that your grandad is no longer alive, and apologies if he is, do you know where he's buried or when he died as he might be buried with Isabella and if he is then you should be able to get her details from the cemetery office.

Hi
I have had a more careful look at the train crash data site. I assume that Chrissie was travelling from the South to the North, i.e. Kings Cross to Darlington or Newcastle. If this is right it rules out the accident at Darlington station on 11th December 1968, which involved an express travelling from Newcastle to Kings Cross:: in addition there were no reported injuries in this derailment and there is no mention of an embankment in the report.
The accident at Thirsk on 31 July 1967 involved a collision between the 12.00 express from Kings Cross to Edinburgh and a derailed cement truck from a goods train. The crash took place on an embankment section of track although the express did not go down the embankment. There were seven fatalities and 45 people injured. Thirsk is just over half the distance from York to Darlington so I think it quite likely that many of the injured would have been taken to Darlington for treatment. So, despite Chrissie's recollection that it was winter time I think Jul-Sep 1967 is the most likely quarter for the registration of Isabelle Liddle's death and I would be very tempted to splash out £7 on a copy of that South Shields death certificate despite the indexed age.
